Boston HONK! Festival
When it comes down to it, public space is an endangered species in these days of Late Capitalism
. Reclaiming it, however, can be a blast. The Boston HONK! Festival
has proved this 5 years in a row with its tradition of bombarding and reclaiming public space using wild music, outrageous costumes, and irresistible dancing. Technically, it is a festival of activist street marching bands blowing their brass and beating their drums. In reality, it is nothing less than a raucous and irresistible takeover of public spaces and streets, orchestrated by unamplified, mobile music and human interaction. I can confidently say that the raw, joyous energy generated in the HONK! space-time is one of the most liberated, most human experiences I’ve had.
