Brief Description Discuss classifications of vertebrates and invertebrates withanimals
Lesson Objectives: Have students understand the differences and similarities between invertebrates and vertebrates.
Materials Needed: Whiteboard/chalkboard
Necessary Background Ensure students are comfortable with Venn Diagrams.
Procedure

Similar adaptations ->Classification of animals -> interconnectedness of species

Split class into pairs : one half of the pairs will be assigned vertebrate animals, one half will be assigned invertebrateanimals. Have pairs identify characteristics of their animal. Vertebrates – mammals, reptiles, fish, birds, amphibians; Invertebrates – insects, spiders, slugs/snails Have pairs discuss commonalities and differences with other pairs. Make sure students are discussing with pairs that have their classification of animal as well as the other classification.

Give students a worksheet with various animals on it, and have them classify the animals as vertebrate or invertebrate. Discuss as a class.

Have students create a Venn Diagram of vertebrate and invertebrate characteristics on a sheet of paper.
