OFFICE OF THE VICE PROVOST

The OVP is responsible for pre-award and non-fiscal post-award administration of grants and contracts,  protection, management, licensing of the University’s intellectual property, and implementation of the University’s policies on conflict of interest in research and misconduct in research and scholarship. In addition, the OVP also oversees the use of human subjects, animals used in research or training, and use of biohazardous agents and recombinant DNA.

Each summary below highlights areas within the OVP office that provide training. Some of these trainings are required while others are suggested for best practice. Each provides a web link where you can find more information.

PROPOSAL DEVELOPMENT
This office offers workshops upon request for faculty, administrators and graduate students on topics including finding funding opportunities, proposal preparation, and grant writing, in addition to sponsoring university-wide training opportunities relevant to preparing grant proposals. Applicants and Administrators Pre-Award Luncheon Series

These monthly workshops will be brown bag lunch events from 12:00pm to 1:00pm. AAPLS is open to all investigators and administrators at Tufts who are engaged in preparation and submission of proposals for sponsored funding. New and early stage investigators are especially encouraged to attend; however established researchers and administrators well versed in pre-award policies will also benefit.

Specialized Trainings (upon request):

  • Grant writing workshops for faculty/for post docs/grad students
  • Writing clearly and concisely for grant proposals
  • Specific aims workshop (included one on one follow up)
  • Finding funding/using funding opportunity databases
  • NIH reviewer panel discussion

INSTITUTIONAL ANIMAL CARE AND USE COMMITTEES (IACUC)
Tufts University has two separate IACUCs that oversee all live animal use at the three Tufts University campuses & Tufts Medical Center. All people listed on an active animal care and use protocol must be trained as required by Federal law. Also offered are various technical and hands-on trainings by the Division of Laboratory Animal Care (DLAM) for the Boston and Medford campuses and the Department of Teaching and Research Resources (DTRR) for the Grafton campus. IACUC Mandatory Training

  • Mandatory Animal Care and Use (MACU) Training must be completed every 3 years in order to maintain approval to work with animals. This training can be found on the internal IACUC website and consists of a PowerPoint presentation, access to a zip folder that contains all IACUC Policies, and links to regulatory information.

Training by the Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine (DLAM) – Boston and Medford Campuses

DLAM is available to assist investigators with a variety of training needs and also is able to customize training based on the specific project. Provided below is a sample of the trainings available.

Training by the Department of Teaching and Research Resources (DTRR) – Grafton Campus

DTRR is available to assist investigators with a variety of training needs and also is able to customize training based on the specific project. Provided below is a sample of the trainings available and also the contact person for each.

  • DTRR Orientation and Tour – an introduction to the facilities and a general overview of policies and procedures. Contact Kimberly Flink, LAT, Research Veterinary Technician
  • Rodent Surgery Training – required for all persons performing rodent surgery in DTRR, reviews surgical planning, pre-, intra-, and post-operative care and aseptic technique. CONTACT Dr. Lara Helwig (Assistant Director)
  • Controlled Substance Training – required for persons obtaining controlled substances from DTRR – reviews recordkeeping, handling, and storage requirements. CONTACT: Kimberly Flink, LAT, Research Veterinary Technician
  • Rodent Biomethodology – optional hands-on training covering basic handling and other procedures tailored to the specific need of the investigators. CONTACT: Kimberly Flink, LAT, Research Veterinary Technician

INSTITUTIONAL BIOSAFETY COMMITTEES (IBC)
Tufts University has two Institutional Biosafety Committees (IBC) that oversee research involving recombinant DNA, infectious agents, select agents, and biological toxins. Personnel listed on an active IBC registration must be trained as required by Federal regulations.
