Community Energy Associate (Rockland, ME)

Community Energy Associate

The Island Institute’s Community Energy Program undertakes projects that address island and remote coastal communities’ priorities related to their energy challenges and opportunities, including energy efficiency, the evaluation of ocean renewable energy and community-owned renewable energy projects, and energy education.

The Community Energy Associate will provide technical, community outreach and administrative support to assist the Island Institute’s community partners to better understand and confront their unique energy challenges.  Through working closely with the Community Energy Director, the Community Energy Associate will implement projects in areas such as: outreach and education with coastal stakeholders on the potential impacts and benefits of offshore wind development in Maine; technical analysis and translation to local stakeholders as part of feasibility studies for community-owned renewable energy projects; program development and implementation of the Island Institute’s Energy for ME program for middle and high school students, teachers and their families; increasing home and business owner access to energy efficiency retrofits and related incentives; and building local capacity to work on energy issues on Maine’s high energy cost islands.

Responsibilities will include: outreach and education, including developing materials and building strong working relationships with both community and energy industry partners; research, including data analysis and translation related to the evaluation of renewable energy projects; organizing, attending and reporting out on meetings; providing administrative support for internal and external initiatives; and advocacy at the state and federal level in collaboration with other staff. This position requires the ability to work on multiple projects at a given time and dedication to building and maintaining relationships within our partner communities.

The successful candidate should have a degree in environmental studies, public policy, planning, economics or a related field. Candidates should have excellent communication skills including the ability to assist with meeting facilitation, listen, write, and speak effectively, as well as the ability to process and analyze energy data. The job also requires: the ability and willingness to travel to Maine’s island and coastal communities and elsewhere around the state on a regular basis, often during irregular hours; attend, speak, or present on behalf of the Island Institute at conferences, public meetings, and legislative hearings; and work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment. The successful candidate will be a self-starter with an excellent work ethic and time management skills. Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, and accessing web-based information is required.  GIS and WindPRO skills are a plus.

The Community Energy Associate will be a full-time position starting on or before November 1, 2011 with competitive compensation, commensurate with experience. Electronic application preferred. Please submit a letter of application including a résumé, a writing sample, and three professional references by October 7, 2011 to:
