Environmental and Social Responsibility Intern, Hess Corporation (NYC, NY)

The Hess Environmental and Social Responsibility offices are seeking a summer intern to assist in strategy, data collection, and assessment efforts focusing on corporate sustainability. The intern will conduct research on current developments in sustainability, identify opportunities to further enhance environmental protection and social responsibility initiatives, and present a briefing to Hess managers on the results of the project.

Anticipated areas for research and analysis include:

• Strategies for successful NGO and stakeholder engagement
• Development of tools for ongoing accountability to engagement strategies
• Corporate planning for implementation of sustainability initiatives
• Social risk mapping and analysis support
• Coordination of social responsibility event
• Conduct ongoing research on emerging environmental issues

Qualifications:
•Pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in environmentally-focused management, science, economics, international affairs (including development), or political science
• Strong research and analytical skills
• Strong written and oral communication abilities
• Able to work both independently and collaboratively
• Experience in environmental politics, quantification approaches, and database construction is a plus

The Acadian Internship in Regional Conservation and Stewardship (Maine)

The Acadian Internship in Regional Conservation and Stewardship
Large landscape conservation training and service for the next generation of public, private and non-profit conservation leaders

The Acadian Internship is a six-week course in landscape-scale regional conservation based in Downeast Maine and southwestern New Brunswick. The course, for which academic credit can be granted by the University of Maine, is a mix of in-class lectures and field-based experiential learning. The first week at the Schoodic Educational and Research Center (SERC) – located on the coast and within Acadia National Park – involves five days of intensive classroom-based instruction by over two dozen local- to internationally-recognized experts (course-related information at http://acadianinternship.wordpress.com).

While at SERC, seminars and tutorials are held daily, including evening sessions. Faculty and field staff work directly with students who come from North America and around the globe for 6 to10 hours each day. In addition, the faculty and field staff are available for additional help before and after scheduled activities. Field manuals and readings include literature selections from academics, research texts and reports, and environmental impact assessments and planning documents are all available on the Acadian Internship website.

During the four-week internship portion of the course, students are placed with local host conservation organizations in the field and will work directly with staff from those organizations, with at least two site visits from course faculty. Student and host organization evaluations of the 2011 internship program experience were highly favorable.

for Dean’s Beans.

Call for Entries: Citizens’ Summit for Sustainable Development

The Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies (CT) seeks applications for its U.S./Canada Citizens’ Summit for Sustainable Development, slated for March 24-25, 2012. Leading to the upcoming 2012 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), the summit will bring together emerging leaders from academia, business, civil society, government, and politics to generate new knowledge, policy and action for sustainability in the U.S. and Canada. Applications will be considered on an ongoing basis but space is limited.

Student Opportunity: MobilizeU Competition

AASHE has partnered with Earth Day Network for the launch of MobilizeU, an international collegiate competition calling upon students to mobilize their campus communities around four weeks of environmental activism surrounding Earth Day 2012 (March 29 – April 29). Students worldwide are encouraged to join the movement as a regional coordinator or school coordinator and organize activities including campus clean-ups, new voter registration drives and Earth Day events. Coordinators will share a photo or video documenting their efforts on the MobilizeU Facebook page.

Alternative Transportation Coordinator, Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech’s Transportation and Campus Services seeks an alternative transportation coordinator to provide assistance in the areas of biking, transit and pedestrian movement on campus. The coordinator will manage bicycle programs; track transportation mode statistics and trends; and participate in sustainability public relations events. Successful candidates will have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in geography, urban planning or a related field and experience using GIS software to record and analyze date. Assistant Director, School of Sustainability, ASU

Arizona State University seeks an assistant director for its School of Sustainability (SOS). The position will assist with curriculum development and scheduling of SOS courses; content development and design of the SOS website; and the development and maintenance of operations plans, long and short-term goals, and program metrics. Successful candidates will have at least a bachelor’s degree in education administration, sustainability or a related discipline and six years of academic administration or similar experience in a sustainability related industry.
