The Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) seeks an intern to work in the Government Affairs department of its Boston office. MAPC is a regional planning agency serving the people who live and work in the greater Boston region. Our mission is to promote smart growth and regional cooperation, which includes protecting the environment, supporting economic development, encouraging sustainable land use, improving transportation, bolstering affordable housing, ensuring public safety, advancing equity and opportunity among people of all backgrounds, and fostering collaboration among municipalities.
Duties may include:
- Working with the department to advance the agency’s legislative agenda at the State House and on Capitol Hill;
- Organizing and participating in program activities related to the agency’s youth violence prevention initiative;
- Conducting research and drafting policy documents on subjects that may include open space, public health and/or municipal finance.
- Collaborating with other agency departments (e.g., Communications, Data Services, and Municipal Services) on projects that may arise.
The intern will have significant responsibilities and will be included in relevant meetings with municipal officials, state legislators and their staff, and various coalition partners. The intern must be personable, have strong writing skills, and possess excellent research capabilities. The ideal candidate is a graduate student with substantial writing experience who is studying law, public policy, public administration, urban planning or another related field. Only current students will be considered for this position. The intern should be willing to commit at least 20 hours per week.
