GIS Intern, Cape Cod National Seashore (Wellfleet, MA)

Cape Cod National Seashore was authorized by Congress in 1961 as a unit of the National Park Service (NPS). The Park preserves approximately 44,600 acres of upland, wetland, tidal lands, and near shore waters located on Outer Cape Cod. As reflected in the Seashore’s General Management Plan, this unit of the NPS was established, in large part, to protect the area’s outstanding natural resources, including federal and state listed sensitive species.

Program Coordinator, Global Perspective Program (Worcester, MA)

Summer Internship – Tufts Office of Sustainability

The Tufts Office of Sustainability is seeking a full-time summer intern to assist with day to day office activities, such as planning and gathering materials for events, greeting visitors, working on the Terracycle program, and organizing programs such as field trips and the Eco-Ambassador program.  The intern will assist with office communications, including creating documents and outreach materials and writing articles, and will assist with social media programming and perform website and blog maintenance.  The intern will also be expected to research sustainability initiatives that might be undertaken on any of the three Tufts’ campuses.  In addition, the intern may be asked to help the Program Director, Communications and Outreach Specialist, or the Education and Outreach Coordinator with any projects they are currently working on.

Regional Organizer – CoFED (Nationwide)

CoFED Regional Organizer Fellows will build the cooperative and food movement by helping students start and run cooperative food ventures on campuses across North America.

As a Regional Organizer Fellow, you will participate in problem solving and peer learning with student teams and allies. You will support approximately 5 team projects in your region by cultivating relationships and facilitating progress with each team. Projects in each region range from cafés and food trucks to buying clubs and grocery stores. You will also foster regional identity with the movement by bringing together student teams, mentors, and consultants in a solidarity network.

The fellowship prepares you for a career in cooperative business and food justice. As part of the CoFED team, CoFED provides you with intensive training and dedicated support in organizing, cooperative business development, and food business. You’ll also gain skills in movement building, business incubation, and nonprofits. As well, all Regional Organizers receive hands-on experience (30 hours/week), a need-based monthly stipend ($900-1,300), reimbursements for expenses and professional development (conferences, trainings, and more), and mentorship from food and cooperative leaders and experts.

We’re looking for ambitious, passionate individuals familiar with student organizing, food justice, food business, and cooperatives.

Ideal candidates have experience in student leadership and campus organizing. They are deeply familiar with working at and/or opening a cooperative enterprise, or any organization with empowerment at the core of its mission. A successful RO Fellow brings or builds the following skills and abilities to this position: organizing, case management, and project management; face-to-face and long-distance communication; delivering education, training, and facilitation; sales or fundraising for building membership; and networking for regional and organizational development.

We’re currently hiring for the following regions: California, the Pacific Northwest, the Midwest, the Northeast, and the Mid-Atlantic – including some reach in the Southeast.

Community Green Lead – USGBC (Boston, MA)

USGBC is seeking a talented and enthusiastic professional with an interest and experience working in the community college sector to create career pathways for a green economy. The position will oversee the Center for Green Schools’ efforts to engage community college staff, faculty and students in green building education and training opportunities. The Community Green Lead will be responsible for proactively increasing engagement of under-represented populations within USGBC and Center for Green Schools’ higher education programs and networks.

Specific responsibilities include

  • Grow the Community Green network and manage the daily program operations
  • Recruit, manage and support the efforts of regionally based volunteers to lead local outreach and engagement efforts to community colleges
  • Facilitate an annual in-person training for volunteers
  • Promote USGBC institutional membership to community colleges, support existing members, and track activities
  • Liaise with USGBC’s Marketing and Communications team to devise an outreach and marketing strategy to support growth of program
  • Work with USGBC Students to increase the number of students engaged at community colleges
  • Drive strategic relationships with other national organizations and corporations to support programmatic goals

Education

  • Bachelors degree in a related field (building industry, environmental discipline) required

Experience

  • 1-3 years program management experience

Other Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in community organizing

  • Knowledge and experience working with community colleges specifically related to sustainability engagement

Earth Week – Past and Future!

We here at the Office of Sustainability have trouble containing our excitement about all things environmental. So we decided that the best way to celebrate Earth Day was with not one but TWO weeks of activities! If you missed the first week, you can still get in on the fun with a variety of happenings (see below!).
Clothing Swap
Last week our Eco-Reps held a session on natural spas, and on Sunday we joined student groups on campus for EarthFest 2013! It was a beautiful day – the Eco-Reps held another successful clothing swap (look at all those clothes!), we tested students’ recycling IQs, students from a Climate Justice course presented their final project, and MORE!
Workhorse Reusable Shopping BagWe have also extended our Earth Week Scavenger Hunt for another week! Snap some cool pictures of specific items and people around campus, post them to our Twitter or Facebook pages, and you could win a cool reusable shopping bag that folds into its own pouch and is small enough to carry in a purse or pocket.

It is important to remember, however, that Earth Day (Earth Week, Earth Month) is just a greater surge in what should be a year-round effort. Make a change today, small or large. Take advantage of the many resources available on our website and blog, submit events and comments to help us improve, and always feel free to actually stop by to talk! Many thanks also to Tufts Institute of the Environment (TIE), the Environmental Studies department, and Tufts Sustainability Collective for all that they do!

Educational Program Coordinator – theMOVE (Cambridge, MA)

theMOVE (getoutma.org) organizes farm-volunteer workdays for diverse urban groups throughout Metro Boston, to connect our participants hands-on with fresh food, and with the labor and land that sustain us. We focus most of our outreach towards low income communities, people of color, and youth. We primarily work with schools and community organizations to set up trips for their groups, but we also host occasional open sign-up trips for individual adults and families. We are seeking an energetic Educational Program Coordinator to coordinate and lead our trips this season.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
The responsibilities of the position will vary, but will foremost comprise the coordination of farm-volunteer trips:
(a) match/schedule groups with appropriate farms, and plan out trips using varied transportation;
(b) facilitate workdays, oversee the work, and keep volunteers motivated and cared for (we will strive to have
two staff members on all trips; the program coordinator will oversee at least 2/3 of them);
(c) lead reflective educational activities (including pre/post sessions at groups’ program sites across Boston);
(d) administer a simple impact survey at end of trips, and tabulate data.
 Additionally, the educational programs coordinator will:
(a) conduct outreach to community groups to get new audiences excited about farm-volunteering;
(b) develop reflective/educational activities for use on trips, to expand our existing curriculum;
(c) refer participants to further community engagement/education opportunities, and develop systems to do so;
(d) support fundraising and community event organizing efforts, as needed.
COMPENSATION: $16 per hour (no health/vacation benefits)
HOURS: 40 hours per week (flexible scheduling – will range 30-50 hours/week)
DURATION: May 1 to November 15

Summer Internship – Baltimore Food Policy Initiative 2013 (Baltimore, MD)

The BFPI summer internship position will provide an opportunity to work on a wide variety of BFPI’s current food access projects. BFPI is currently focused on several food access strategies to increase access to healthy food in Baltimore City food deserts including, but not limited to, public markets, farmers markets, and the city’s Food Desert Retail Strategy. The internship will also involve promoting these strategies, increasing communication among our partners, and promoting the work of partner organizations involved in Food PAC, through various social media outlets.

Qualifications include strong technical writing skills, ability to multi-task several projects at one time, and Master’s Degree or pursuing Master’s Degree preferred. The internship is a paid, full-time (40 hours a week) position that will work from the Department of Planning from approximately June 3rd-August 2st, 2013.
