Communications Intern – Green Light (New Orleans, LA)

Green Light New Orleans, a community-based environmental non-profit, is looking for a summer intern to manage Green Light’s web presence. The position is an unpaid internship. Position expectations are detailed below.

Green Light New Orleans’ mission is to invest energy in people and assist New Orleans residents face to face, one household at a time. Green Light New Orleans works to increase the energy efficiency and sustainability of New Orleans households to demonstrate that a single action can lead to big changes that benefit everyone if that action is repeated many times by many different people.

Description:
Intern will maintain all social media platforms to increase Green Light’s visibility on the web, including blog, Facebook, and Twitter.

Purpose:
To increase awareness in the community about sustainability issues by using social media to maintain Green Light’s presence on the web.

Tree Ambassador Intern – City of Cambridge (Cambridge, MA)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The position reports to the DPW City Arborist and works closely with the Landscape Administrator for the DPW. Specific duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Responsibly represent the Cambridge Department of Public Works – Parks and Forestry Division
  • Inspect, water, and maintain selected young trees throughout the City.
  • Ride a bike with trailer attached loaded with equipment and connect equipment to fire hydrants  in order to water trees and fill ‘Gator Bags’ with water.  Weed existing tree wells
  • Interact with residents and businesses and educate them about tree care.
  • Supervise volunteers.
  • Perform related tasks as needed.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Background in urban forestry, horticulture, or environmental studies.  Some supervisory experience working with volunteers highly desirable Undergraduate coursework in Horticulture, Forestry or Environmental Studies strongly preferred. Ability to identify common tree species. Ability to work independently. Strong communication and writing skills.  Excellent interpersonal skills

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Moderate physical activity including lifting, bending, squatting, stretching, pushing, dragging, reaching, and pulling.  Exposure to all weather conditions. Work outside for extended periods of time.  Ride a bike for several miles a day.  Pre-employment Physical Examination may be required. RATE: $16.63/hour

HOURS PER WEEK: 30 hrs per week, temporary position (up to 10 weeks during summer). Schedule will vary based upon business need, and will include some early evening and weekend hours

Tree Inventory Intern – City of Cambridge (Cambridge, MA)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reports to the DPW City Arborist and works closely with the Information Systems Manager for the DPW. Specific duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Assist in updating an inventory of street trees in the City.
  • Create and/or update the tree inventory for the Cambridge Common, Cambridge Cemetery, Cambridge Golf Course and various other locations throughout the City.
  • Collect information on street trees including caliper, species and location.
  • Record location of trees in the field using GIS software.
  • Field survey on foot covering potentially +/- 5 miles a day
  • Coordinate work through the DPW Forestry Unit and MIS

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Working knowledge in personal computer operation and experience in working with Windows programs such as Access, Excel and Word.  Proficiency in GIS as well as an MCA, ISA and/or MCLP certification is a plus.   Undergraduate coursework in Horticulture/Forestry/Plant Biology desired. Massachusetts Driver’s License Class D preferable.

 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to identify common tree species
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to read a map
  • Good writing skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills

Residential Energy Efficiency Program Coordinator – Mass Energy (Boston, MA)

The Massachusetts Energy Consumers Alliance (Mass Energy) is a nonprofit organization that has been working for over 30 years to make energy more affordable and sustainable. Our programs include energy efficiency, discount heating oil, and green power. This full-time position’s primary role will be to connect consumers with the appropriate programs to save energy, save money, and reduce their carbon footprints. For the first 12-months, a large part of this employee’s job will be spent promoting Renew Boston.

Consulting & Executive Transitions Program Intern – Third Sector New England (Boston, MA)

Third Sector New England (TSNE) provides management and leadership resources to help nonprofits support healthy, just communities. The Consulting and Executive Transitions Program provides capacity-building consulting services, focusing on executive and organizational transitions, succession planning, coaching for leadership and teams, and general consulting.

Position Summary:
This internship is an amazing opportunity to shadow nonprofit organizational development consultants in the field, gain first-hand knowledge of the internal management of a nonprofit consulting practice, delve deeply into the theoretical underpinnings of executive and organizational transition consulting, understand how nonprofit organizational assessments are conducted, and learn about process evaluation for nonprofit capacity building efforts.

There are multiple paid positions available. In this cohort-style internship program, you will be placed with a team of interns to work on both independent and group projects, and engage in biweekly group learning sessions with consultants on a variety of relevant topics. The overarching goal of this program is to develop emerging leadership in the field and provide a unique learning experience that mixes on-the-ground consulting work with in-depth research and learning.

This internship will be customized to fit both your personal learning goals and TSNE’s organizational goals. However, some potential projects could include:

  • Shadowing consultants in the field, taking notes at meetings, analyzing data, and drafting reports for clients
  • Evaluating internal systems and processes, providing recommendations for improvement
  • Researching specialty areas within organizational development consulting, and developing materials for use by consultants
  • Developing TSNE’s training series and supporting event planning
  • Identifying funding/sponsorship partners and alternative funding models for trainings, events, and/or programs
  • Doing environment scans and in-depth analyses of other organizations doing capacity-building work in specific areas such as fiscal sponsorship or organizational transitions
  • Researching social media/online marketing tools/best practices and crafting communications strategies
  • Participating in TSNE’s ongoing strategic planning process by researching trends in the nonprofit sector
  • Attending learning convenings of TSNE consultants and interim leaders
  • Conducting independent projects co-developed by the Intern and TSNE staff

Coordinator of Sustainability Projects – Western Michigan University (Kalamazoo, MI)

In the 2010 Sustainable Endowments Institute’s Green Report Card, WMU was identified as one of 80 National “Campus Sustainability Leaders.” We have subsequently been recognized as a Michigan Green leader (Detroit Free Press, 2013) and a Founding Circle Member of the Billion Dollar Green Challenge. Sustainability is built into the mission and strategic plan of Western Michigan University.

In order to continue this tradition of excellence, we are seeking a Coordinator of Sustainability Projects with vision, talent, and drive to serve as a leadership team member who will assist our Executive Director for Campus Sustainability to elevate our programs to the next level. We are seeking an experienced writer with high-level quantitative, design, management, and leadership skills. We are also seeking a candidate with a demonstrated commitment to diversity in their work and skills.

The Coordinator of Sustainability Projects manages the Wesustain Internship Program and Sustainability Studio, leads internal campus sustainability projects, runs our residential living, learning laboratory – the Gibbs House – and manages our Student Sustainability Grant Program (which offered $75,000 this year for student-led sustainability projects). The successful candidate will have entrepreneurial spirit, a demonstrated commitment to sustainability, and a collaborative approach.

WMU’s vibrant Office for Sustainability (OfS) was launched in 2013 and is led by an Executive Director for Campus Sustainability who is a full professor and reports directly to WMU’s president. The OfS also has a full-time Sustainability Coordinator who leads grant development, reporting, event management, special projects, and supports our Sustainability Across Research and Teaching Initiative. In addition, the OfS staff includes a Manager of Waste Reduction Services, a full-time Administrative Assistant, a growing cadre of highly motivated graduate students from several colleges, and a diverse group of more than 25 undergraduate interns and student workers from across the university.

Federal Field Organizer Fellowship – Environment America (Boston, MA and Washington, D.C.)

Environment America’s Fellowship Program

Fighting for the environment is the challenge of a lifetime. Yet so many recent college graduates aren’t sure where to start. Each year, we hire college graduates who – like you – have the passion, the commitment and the talent it takes to stand up to polluting industries, organize support and fight for our environmental values. As an Environment America fellow, you’ll get a two-year crash course in the nuts and bolts of environmental activism, organizing, advocacy and the type of institution-building that can sustain long-term battles.

Working with our Field Director Christy Leavitt, and other senior staff, you’ll plan and run grassroots campaigns, set up and speak at news conferences, organize town hall meetings, lobby lawmakers, run citizen outreach campaigns, identify new members, raise money, recruit and manage staff, and much more.

After two years, you’ll have participated in a rigorous training and gained invaluable hands-on experience. Best of all, you’ll be ready to become a lead organizer, a lead advocate or a state director with Environment America or one of our state affiliates. You might even start a new state affiliate or launch a new program.

Salary and benefits:

As a federal field organizer you would earn $24,000 in your first year and $25,500 in your second year. You’ll be eligible to join our group health plan at no cost to you. You’ll accrue two weeks of paid vacation over the course of your first year, and three weeks in your second year. You’ll be eligible to apply for college loan assistance after your third month, and to participate in our 401(k) plan at the end of your first year.

Northeast Assistant Regional Coordinator (part-time) – The Real Food Challenge (Boston, MA)

The Real Food Challenge (RFC), a fiscally sponsored project of Third Sector New England, is a national campaign that unites, trains, and supports student leaders working to get their schools to support a more just and sustainable food system. Our flagship goal is to redirect $1 billion of college and university food purchases to “real food”—food that’s fair, ecologically sound, humane, and local and community-based—over the next 10 years. We work toward this goal, and the broader goal of supporting a vibrant student food movement, by uniting college students through on-campus organizing, leadership training institutes, and summits.

Job Summary:
The Assistant Coordinator is a critical field staffing position with Real Food Challenge. Directly responsible for student campaigns and regional network development, the Assistant Coordinator will be supported by a Regional Coordinator and work closely with Field Organizing Fellows. Primary to their responsibilities will be working with student teams to secure Real Food campaign victories, building and maintaining relationships with student leaders, and helping to identify and implement future strategies for the campaign. The Assistant Coordinator will also assist the Coordinator with other tasks as needed.

Internship – CNUNE (Boston, MA)

CNUNE is seeking an energetic and motivated individual to work directly with key members of the Chapter’s Board of Directors to advance the organization’s advocacy initiatives during a summer internship.CNU New England (CNUNE) is one of 15 regional Chapters of the national advocacy organization known as the Congress for the New Urbanism. The organization is a diverse league of advocates from various disciplines, including architecture, urban design, urban planning, law, government, and development; all members share an interest in the built environment and a concern for its improvement.

The Programming Intern would assist the Executive Committee in developing and implementing a speaker series for 2013-2014, taking responsibility for: (a) event logistics and (b) event marketing.

The Intern would also be responsible for (c) logistical management and support for the Chapter’s upcoming Tactical Urbanism Salon and (d) support for Chapter operations.

Energy Research Intern – United Nations Development Programme (New York, NY)

The research intern will work on updating UNDP’s Energy Portfolio analysis from 2011. This will primarily involve combing through large datasets and doing large scale data extraction and analysis. Another element of work will also involve data verification and calling Regional and Country Offices to seek additional project information.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The research intern will work on updating UNDP’s Energy Portfolio analysis from 2011. This will primarily involve combing through large datasets and doing large scale data extraction and analysis. Another element of work will also involve data verification and calling Regional and Country Offices to seek additional project information.

The responsibilities of the intern will encompass the following:

  • Analysis of UNDP Energy Portfolio
  • Assisting project manager in updating UNDP energy portfolio with additional project information and figures.
  • Data verification. She or he will help verify projects captured in the database are in fact energy projects.
  • Improve spread sheet so that information such as country count, funding sources are easily identifiable. This will also entail categorizing and separating funding sources in the database.
  • Project documentation research. This includes searching for existing project summaries, project documents and fact sheets that are on Country office page. It will include liaising with regional service centres, global energy team counterparts, and environment & energy focal points in country offices to verify data on energy related projects. This will sometimes require follow up of emails or by telephone.
  • Producing a summary document and PowerPoint presentation illustrating results of the analysis

Other potential responsibilities:

  • Assist with organizing conference, meetings, and other energy related events
  • Assist with developing energy case studies in different areas of our work and produce write ups.

Competencies:

  • Excellent ability to synthesize large amounts of raw data, extract trends and package data into a comprehensive and understandable manner. Demonstrated experience with large data sets is required.
  • Knowledge on energy or off grid energy technologies in developing countries is an advantage.
    Strong research, analytical and writing abilities.
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel is required, experience with STATA or SPSS is advantageous.
  • Excellent demonstrated ability to work under tight deadlines in an independent working environment.
  • Demonstrates skills to also work well as part of a team.
  • Demonstrates good oral and written communication skills; fluency in English, both written and oral, is required. Fluency in French or Spanish is advantageous.

General Eligibility:

  • Must be enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (masters level or above).
  • Completed at least four years of full time studies at a university or equivalent.
  • Has not graduated prior to the beginning of the internship.

Specific Education and Work Experience:

  • Current graduate students in Economics with interest in environment /energy issues or graduate students in economics, public policy, environment/energy, international affairs with some communications experience.
  • Some relevant work or internship experience related to environment and energy, etc.

Candidates who are shortlisted for an interview must submit prior to the interview the following documents:

  • Official letter from the University confirming enrollment in a graduate-level degree programme;
  • Have a valid visa to work in the US;
  • Letter of endorsement from a faculty member who has worked with the student in the recent past and who is knowledgeable on the student’s performance;
