Knowledge Management/ Communications Intern – United Nations Development Programme (New York, NY)

The knowledge management/communications intern will support the Sustainable Energy Team primarily with producing and updating knowledge products and communications material in line with UNDP’s current activities and involvement in Sustainable Energy for All.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The research intern will work on updating UNDP’s Energy Portfolio analysis from 2011. This will primarily involve combing through large datasets and doing large scale data extraction and analysis. Another element of work will also involve data verification and calling Regional and Country Offices to seek additional project information.

The responsibilities of the intern will encompass the following:

  • Analysis of UNDP Energy Portfolio
  • Assisting project manager in updating UNDP energy portfolio with additional project information and figures.
  • Data verification. She or he will help verify projects captured in the database are in fact energy projects.
  • Improve spread sheet so that information such as country count, funding sources are easily identifiable. This will also entail categorizing and separating funding sources in the database.
  • Project documentation research. This includes searching for existing project summaries, project documents and fact sheets that are on Country office page. It will include liaising with regional service centres, global energy team counterparts, and environment & energy focal points in country offices to verify data on energy related projects. This will sometimes require follow up of emails or by telephone.
  • Producing a summary document and PowerPoint presentation illustrating results of the analysis

Other potential responsibilities:

  • Assist with organizing conference, meetings, and other energy related events
  • Assist with developing energy case studies in different areas of our work and produce write ups.


  • Excellent ability to synthesize large amounts of raw data, extract trends and package data into a comprehensive and understandable manner. Demonstrated experience with large data sets is required.
  • Knowledge on energy or off grid energy technologies in developing countries is an advantage.
  • Strong research, analytical and writing abilities.
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel is required, experience with STATA or SPSS is advantageous.
  • Excellent demonstrated ability to work under tight deadlines in an independent working environment.
  • Demonstrates skills to also work well as part of a team.
  • Demonstrates good oral and written communication skills; fluency in English, both written and oral, is required. Fluency in French or Spanish is advantageous.
General Eligibility:
  • Must be enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (masters level or above).
  • Completed at least four years of full time studies at a university or equivalent.
  • Has not graduated prior to the beginning of the internship.
Specific Education and Work Experience:
  • Current graduate students in Economics with interest in environment /energy issues or graduate students in economics, public policy, environment/energy, international affairs with some communications experience.
  • Some relevant work or internship experience related to environment and energy, etc.
Financial Aspects:
Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP. All costs connected with an intern’s participation in the Programme must be borne by:
  • The nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students;
  • The student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his/her own arrangements for travel (including to and from the office), visas, accommodation, insurance, etc as necessary.

Candidates who are shortlisted for an interview must submit prior to the interview the following documents:

  • Official letter from the University confirming enrollment in a graduate-level degree programme;
  • Have a valid visa to work in the US;
  • Letter of endorsement from a faculty member who has worked with the student in the recent past and who is knowledgeable on the student’s performance;

Environmental Interpretation Internship – US Fish and Wildlife Service (Laurel, MD)

Salary: $98-$156 per week (20-32 hours per week) intern stipend.

Location:U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Patuxent Research Refuge, Laurel, Maryland – duty station will be located in Fairfax County, VA.

EcoDistrict Energy Fellowship – Boston Redevelopment Authority (Boston, MA)

Fellowship Summary:

The EcoDistrict Energy Fellow will be the Boston Redevelopment Authority’s (BRA) and City of Boston’s primary staff person dedicated to developing Boston’s EcoDistrict program and district energy and clean energy policy and planning. Communications Intern – The Borneo Project (Oakland, CA)

The Borneo Project brings international attention and support to community-led efforts to defend forests, sustainable livelihoods, and human rights. We believe that protecting human rights and environmental integrity in Borneo is a critical component of the global movement for a just and peaceful world. We have worked for over twenty years to help Borneo’s rainforest communities protect their lands, livelihoods, and cultures for generations to come.

The Borneo Project is looking for a motivated intern who is interested in exploring the world of international solidarity activism, environmental justice, and non-profit administration. We are currently looking for a self-motivated intern to join our 2-person U.S. team and assist our Communications and Development Coordinator with communications and social media work. As part of a small team, this intern will be involved in many aspects of project management and must be excited about taking on a range of tasks that can change frequently based on weekly priorities.

This is a 3-month internship (with the possibility of extension) that comes with a $300/month reimbursement stipend. This position requires 15 hours/week, with a minimum of 4 hours/week in the office. This position will report to the Communications and Development Coordinator. Interns must be based in the Bay Area.

Tasks will include (but are not limited to):

  • Research and compose blog posts, linking to all social media platforms
  • Regularly update our Facebook and Twitter feeds with current, breaking and/or relevant
  • Borneo-related news
  • Generate creative media for Facebook and Twitter, in accordance with Borneo Project protocols

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Smart Commute:
• Consult major regional employers on programs to lower the impacts of commuting and mid-day transportation needs
• Work with manager to expand program to 50 Upper Valley workplaces

• Measure and promote progress toward reducing vehicle fuel use in the Upper Valley

We seek a per-project Project Manager to conducts on-site Phase I environmental assessments to identify recognized environmental conditions and other conditions of environmental concern for both the Project and off-site properties in accordance with ASTM standards and Client-specific scopes of work. President’s Campus Sustainability Council Releases Report

Campus Sustainability Report Cover 02The Campus Sustainability Council, which was convened by President Tony Monaco in January 2012, has released its report outlining recommendations to reduce the university’s environmental footprint.

The Council’s report both renews Tufts’ commitments to greenhouse gas reduction goals and sets new goals focusing on energy and emissions, waste reduction, and water conservation – areas where Tufts’ operations have the greatest impact on the environment.

This document will be the starting point for the next phase in the process: implementation planning, which will be overseen by Vice President of Operations Linda Snyder. The Council, co-chaired by President Monaco and Executive Vice President Patricia Campbell, was comprised of students, staff and faculty representing all Tufts campuses in Massachusetts.

When implementation planning gets underway, we are counting on the Tufts community to stay engaged and participate in creating the change needed to build a sustainable university!
