Environmental Project Intern – City of Melrose Department of Public Works (Melrose, MA)

Supervisor: Solid Waste and Recycling Coordinator, Energy Efficiency Manager

Status: Unpaid, flexible hours, approximately 10 hrs/week

Time: July – August (June optional if student is available)

Summary:

This is an exciting new internship opportunity for someone who has an interest in working on sustainability issues and learning more about the field. The intern will split their time on projects with the Melrose Solid Waste and Recyling Coordinator and the Energy Efficiency Manager.

Responsibilities:

  • Creating informational packets and brochures
  • Research and reports (i.e. on biodiesel, electric vehicles, etc.)
  • Data entry in order to produce maps, graphs, and other presentations
  • Event outreach on recycling initiatives
  • Updating the Sustainable Melrose website
  • Miscellaneous office support as needed

Qualifications:

  • Car/bike/walk ability to transport between locations
  • Interest, knowledge, energy and enthusiasm for environmental issues, activism, and education
  • Ability to use Microsoft Excel, Word, and other basic computer skills
  • Ability to work independently

Boston Green Schools Volunteer Management Coordinator – AmeriCorps VISTA (Boston, MA)

Boston Public School District will welcome 1200 new students in September 2013, the highest enrollment since 2005. While the City of Boston is committing to invest $2.6 million in schools with high concentrations of poverty this year, the funding does not cover the millions of dollars of facilities investments needed to bring schools up to the standards students and staff deserve. The Boston Green Schools Volunteer Management (GSVM) program will help schools improve their facilities and school grounds. Through the Program, BPS will establish close partnerships with local volunteer engagement organizations to develop easier ways for volunteers to engage with schools and for companies to donate resources and equipment to schools. The GSVM Coordinator will develop partnerships, establish online volunteer project applications and track the success of volunteer projects. The GSVM Program will provide green school education to teachers, staff and community organizations and seek to increase the number of green volunteer projects through the annual Green Apple Day of Service (September 28). The GSVM Coordinator will be at the center of designing, implementing and monitoring this new Program. By making it someone’s role to support volunteer engagement and green school project planning , BPS will leverage more funds and resources, be able to train more qualified volunteers and ultimately, transform our schools to be green and healthy places for students and staff. The VISTA member will be a member of the Boston Cares AmeriCorps VISTA Cohort of 20+ VISTA members serving at 9 Boston host sites.

Member Duties : The Boston Green School Volunteer Management Coordinator will design and launch the new Volunteer Management Program. This position will require the Coordinator to collaborate with engineers, architects, community non-profits, and school leaders across the District’s 135 schools. The Coordinator should be comfortable working in both an office setting and in the field with volunteers. The Coordinator will be responsible for three main GSVM projects: 1. Design an online application tool to efficiently connect schools that have specific project needs with community-based resources (volunteers, funding, etc). Develop promotional and educational resources and spread the word about the Program. 2. Coordinate the Schoolyard Stewardship Initiative. Match volunteers with schools ensure they are maintained year round. Help schools access resources to build new vegetable gardens. 3. Coordinate at least one Green Apple Day of Service project in September 2013 at a Boston school.
