Managing Director – Sustainable Business Network of Massachusetts (Cambridge, MA)

The Sustainable Business Network of Massachusetts (SBN) is seeking a Managing Director to direct SBN’s daily operations and lead strategic development and growth of the organization and its core programs. The ideal candidate will be a passionate and motivated sustainability professional with experience in the following core areas:

As Managing Director you will be responsible for directing the day-to-day operations and strategic development of SBN and its core programs and events including (but not limited to) the following specific responsibilities:

Membership:

  • New member identification, recruitment, and engagement

Fundraising:

  • Foundations: Research appropriate foundations and develop strategic relationships for foundation support

Events:

  • Lead planning of SBN’s annual Sustainability Leadership Summit & Annual Holiday Party
  • Provide overall management and direction for the development, planning, and execution of SBN’s recurring and one-time small-scale events including monthly B2B Networking Group Meetings, SBN On Tours, ALLocal Dinners, Technical Assistance Workshops, documentary film screenings and more.
  • Provide guidance and direction for SBN’s large-scale local food events including the annual Boston Local Food Festival, Hyper Local Craft Brewfest, Local Craft Brewfest and Buy Local Trade Show planned in collaboration with partner organization The Williams Agency.

Staff Management:

  • Recruit, contract and manage SBN staff and interns
  • Ensure professional development of staff and interns
  • Provide day-to-day guidance & support
  • Support the Sustainable Business/Community Leader Program staff with new client development and engagement (particularly highprofile clients)

Finances:

  • Invoicing and bill processing
  • Budgeting and budget management
  • Program and event accounting
  • Basic financial accounting: check/cash processing etc.

Office Management:

  • Manage office lease and tenant sub-leases
  • Act as primary liaison to landlord and sub-tenants
  • Manage office services including internet, phone, and cleaning
  • Ensure office runs smoothly

Communications:

  • Must have strong writing skills. Will be responsible for editing and assisting staff in writing newsletter articles, blog posts, website updates and other outreach communications.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations at events and conferences

Other:

  • Work with the Executive Director to prepare board reports, attend board meetings and make presentations as needed
  • Represent SBN at internal and external conferences and events
  • Support special programs including the SBN Affinity Program, Worcester SBLP, and others as needed
  • Develop strategic & collaborative partnerships with businesses and organizations to grow the organization and achieve our mission

Qualifications:

  • College degree required, graduate degree preferred
  • Professional experience in environmental sustainability, local business, or related field
  • Prior management experience (project/programs and staff) required
  • Fundraising experience & knowledge
  • Experience and ability to sell and market a product/service/idea
  • Budgeting/financial management experience and the ability to work with spreadsheets
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills

With the support and guidance of GreenBean Recycle, assumes marketing and community outreach of on campus GreenBean Recycle Machine as well as provides leadership in the development and execution of recycling challenges. Focuses on building relationships with key stakeholders, including campus recycling and sustainability departments, student clubs and organizations, and the student population at large.

What do I learn?

GB Recycle provides ambassadors with a host of tools and resources to increase usage of GB machines. GB Ambassadors will also gain professional experience, including:

  • Learning to plan, write, and execute marketing campaigns.
  • Using BaseCamp and other industry-level project management software to collaborate with peers and increase their professional network.
  • Work with major brand sponsors relevant to student population.

3rd Annual Undergraduate Environmental Photo Contest (2013-2014)

Guidelines and Submission Information

The Tufts Environmental Studies Program supports an annual Environmental Photo Contest. The contest is open to all Tufts undergraduate students and will include prizes for 1st place ($150), 2nd place ($100), and 3rd place ($50).

Each student can take and submit up to 5 photos as part of the contest, but is only eligible to win one of the prizes listed above.

All styles of photography are welcome (black & white or color).

To be considered for one of the prizes, submissions must include:

  1. All submissions must include:
    1. a high-quality 8×10″ print, and
    2. a digital file (min. 300 dpi jpg or tif format)
  2. A printed document including a brief description of the image; and the names of any individuals, places, etc. included in the photo(s).
  3. The Environmental Photo Contest Application >
  4. The Photo Subject Release Form >PLEASE NOTE: Photo(s) submitted for the Environmental Photo Contest must include a completed photo release form for EVERY INDIVIDUAL in a given photo. Photos that do not meet this requirement will not be considered for any of the three awards.

The Parent/Guardian Photo Release Form, (if applicable)**(Photos taken of children under the age of 18 who are part of an individual’s research or fieldwork, will not be considered unless photo release forms are signed by the parent or legal guardian of EVERY CHILD who appears in a given photo or photos. 2014 Fellowship – Environment America

Apply to be an Environment America fellow

As an Environment America fellow, you’ll get a two-year crash course in the nuts and bolts of environmental activism, organizing, advocacy and the type of institution-building that can sustain long-term battles.

Learn by doing

You won’t be rehearsing to make an impact—you’ll be making one. As a fellow you’ll:

  • Plan and run grassroots campaigns: you’ll identify a policy or power-building goal, develop a strategy, then devise and carry out the tactics of your campaign.
  • Organize town hall meetings: you’ll create events where constituents have an opportunity to make their needs clear and hold politicians accountable. You’ll also lobby lawmakers directly, learning to make a convincing case for our policy goals.
  • Set up and speak at news conferences: you’ll create news events to get the word out about your campaign through the media. You’ll also meet with editorial boards, and get op-eds published.
  • Run citizen outreach campaigns: you’ll build the power of your organization, learning to fundraise, manage staff and educate the public.

Gain the experience you need to lead

After two years, you’ll have participated in a rigorous training and gained invaluable hands-on experience. Best of all, you’ll be ready to become a lead advocate, a lead organizer or a state director with Environment America or one of our state affiliates. You might even start a new state affiliate or launch a new program.

Qualifications

We’re seeking candidates ready to commit themselves to fighting for the environment. Being a fellow is not for everybody. It’s tough, demanding and the challenges never stop. We look for smarts, leadership experience, top-notch written and verbal skills and an eagerness to learn. We value experience organizing, including building campus groups.

Placement

We’re accepting applications with our state affiliates across the country and in Washington, D.C. We accept applications on a rolling basis. Most fellowships begin in August, though a limited number are available throughout the year. You can apply through Environment America or directly with one of our state affiliates. If you’re flexible, you can apply for multiple positions in multiple locations.

Salary and benefits

As a fellow with Environment America or one of our state affiliates, you’ll earn $23,750-$24,000 in your first year and $24,500-$25,500 in your second year. You’ll be eligible to join our group health plan at no cost to you. You’ll accrue two weeks of paid vacation over the course of your first year, and three weeks in your second year. You’ll be eligible to apply for college loan assistance after your third month, and to participate in our 401(k) plan at the end of your first year. Salary and benefits vary in California and New York.

Fall 2013 Internship – Environment America (Washington, DC; Boston, MA & more)

If you want to spend the semester learning how to make a real impact on the decisions that affect the energy we use, the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the places we love, apply for an internship with Environment America. We’re taking applications now for fall 2013 internships in Washington D.C. and 29 states across the country.

So, what do interns with Environment American and the State Environment Groups do? Make a real impact on critical environmental issues!

You’ll learn how to analyze environmental problems, advocate for smart solutions, and build public support. And you’ll work one-on-one with one of our advocates and organizers, providing a unique, mentored experienced.

Responsibilities vary, but you’ll do some mix of:

  • Researching critical environmental problems and preparing reports to release to the public
  • Coordinating and attending media events, like news conference
  • Writing and publishing letters to the editor and working on news releases
  • Attending lobby meetings with lawmakers and other decision-makers
  • Working with coalition partners, like public health groups and other environmental groups
  • Tracking legislation or regulations on the federal or state levels
  • Generating public support for our campaigns, such as by collecting petitions or using social media

And you’ll attend briefings and trainings to learn more about environmental issues and gain advocacy and organizing skills.

Our internships are unpaid, and we cannot provide housing or travel assistance. We will work with you to secure academic credit from your college or university if that is an option.

What happens after my internship?

Through an internship with Environment America or one of the State Environment Groups you’ll get the training and the experience you need to be prepared for a career in the environmental movement. And each year, we hire passionate, talented and committed college graduates to join our Fellowship Program. Some of our former interns have gone on to become some of our most successful Fellows.

Social Change Agents – Green Action (Flexible work location)

Green Action USA and the Green Shadow Cabinet seek dedicated, personable, experienced, and skilled social change agents to manage Green Action, Inc.; d/b/a Green Action USA, a new 501(c)4 organization promoting practices that lead to a more ecological, just, peaceful, and democratic society and to carry forward the Green Shadow Cabinet, a project of Green Action USA.

Qualifications:

  • 5 or more years experience in social change work;

  • Overseeing online fundraising, direct mail, and major donor fundraising programs;

Note that depending on the pool of applicants, we may decide to divide these responsibities into two positions, one full time and one half time.

Climate Organizer – New Organizing Institute (Washington, DC)

New Organizing Institute seeks a Climate Organizer to manage a new program to build capacity and depth in the climate movement.

The Climate Organizer will be responsible with assisting partner organizations in climate-related training work, and recruiting and supporting a team of fellows to work in climate organizations.

NOI is a progressive organization that builds capacity and sophistication in the progressive movement in the areas of technology and new media, especially as they relate to organizing. NOI offers numerous trainings for progressive practitioners, engages in data research, and coordinates with a wide range of progressive partners to leverage common interests in the improvement of technology options in the field.

This position is temporary through June 2014, with an option to extend through the 2014 elections and possibly beyond.
Responsibilities 

The Climate Organizer will play a crucial role on NOI’s Training and Campaign Support Team by:

  • Developing and delivering training content to equip climate organizers to run sophisticated campaigns (as many as 13 trainings from Fall 2013 to Spring 2014)
  • Manage Climate Leadership Corps to… — Identify and select fellows to participate in the program.
  • Recruiting organizations to host fellows.
  • Working with host organizations and fellows to identify placements that will have the biggest impact.

Program Coordinator – Northwest Biocarbon Initiative (Olympia, WA, Seattle, WA, or Portland, OR)

The Northwest Biocarbon Initiative (NBI) program is dedicated to establishing the Northwest as a leading laboratory and incubator for biocarbon solution. In addition to rapidly transitioning off of fossil fuels (the first climate solution), we must also restore safe levels of greenhouse gases in Earth’s atmosphere by developing scalable strategies to pull carbon from the air and store it in soils, trees, and other plants (the second climate solution). NBI is building the movement to protect and increase carbon stored in forests, farms, communities, wetlands, coasts, and other ecosystems, in ways that are economically attractive and deliver multiple public benefits.

Climate Solutions is seeking a talented Coordinator to lead our NBI program in its movement-building work to:

  • Engage and lead a diverse range of partner groups in communications activities connecting their work to Northwest leadership on the global biocarbon imperative, and to overcome key barriers to biocarbon solutions;
  • Increase public understanding and visibility of biocarbon as the second major solution to the climate crisis;
  • Frame current scientific knowledge on biocarbon for public understanding, and identify key gaps in knowledge to help shape the research agenda going forward; and
  • Educate policymakers – local, state, and federal – on the biocarbon imperative, and on specific policy actions they can take to support biocarbon innovation and Northwest leadership.

The NBI Coordinator will work in close consultation with Climate Solutions’ Director of Strategic Innovation Eileen V. Quigley, who will supervise this position, as well as with NBI’s Steering Committee, which includes several key partner organizations. This position may be located in our Olympia, Seattle, or Portland office.

ENRE Student Fellowship Program – American Planning Association

APA’s Environment, Natural Resources and Energy Division announces its Student Fellowship Program for second-year planning graduate students.

Award

$2,500 for the 2013-14 School Calendar Year (two awards of $1,250 at the end of each semester)

Eligibility:

  • Second-year graduate student enrolled in a PAB-accredited graduate planning program focusing on issues related to the environment, natural resources or energy. Student may be full or part-time, but must be classified as a second year student.
  • GPA: B or above (3.0 on a 4.0 scale)
  • Studies focused on issues related to the environment, natural resources or energy, and pursuing a program or course of study consistent with the Division’s mission.
  • Preference will be given to students with APA and Division memberships.

Selection

The Division’s Fellowship committee will select the Fellowship recipient by August 26, 2013.

The Division’s mission is to promote sound environmental, natural resources and energy planning and sound resource use policies among individual members of APA and the general public, and within the planning profession and communities of all scales.

Awards will be based on:

  • Meeting the eligibility criteria
  • Quality of the application materials
  • Connection of the student’s course of study to Division’s mission

Submission Requirements:

  1. Application form (doc)
  2. Recommendation letter from thesis/project faculty advisor
  3. Description of masters’ thesis or project, including how it relates to the Division’s mission (800-word maximum)
  4. Essay describing interest in environmental planning, experience (extra-curricular activities may be included), and future career goals (600-word maximum)
