Assistant Director of Sustainability, Pomona College (Claremont, CA)

Pomona College is seeking a talented, energetic, dedicated, and well-organized professional to serve as the Assistant Director, Sustainability. The candidate must be detailed-oriented and comfortable working in a relaxed but busy environment.

The successful candidate will provide leadership to the College’s sustainability programs and will develop, implement, and assess efforts for the integration of sustainability throughout campus operations and programs. This position will develop, enhance, and maintain environmental stewardship within the campus community and among its constituencies as well as develop strategies for: energy and resource conservation and efficiency, building performance and retro-commissioning, cost forecasting, community engagement and outreach, and strategic planning for sustainability. This position oversees the various programs of the Sustainability Integration Office. This position is an ex-officio member of the President’s Advisory Committee on Sustainability.

Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Studies or other related field of study required; Master’s Degree preferred; Five years of hands-on experience implementing environmental or sustainability programs is required.  LEED level accreditation preferred or the ability to obtain within 18 months.

Sustainability Program Coordinator, Ursinus College (Collegeville, PA)

Reporting to the Director of Facilities, the Sustainability Outreach Coordinator works in the Office of Sustainability (OS) and has overall responsibility for updating, strategizing on, reporting on, and working with Ursinus College employees to implement the College’s Climate and Sustainability Action Plan (CSAP) in compliance with our commitment to the ACUPCC. Tasks performed with a high level of autonomy include:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
*   Must be able to communicate in English, including the ability to speak in public.
*   Must be able to work collaboratively with staff, faculty, and students.

ATTENDANCE
·      This position is a full time position with flexible work hours to accommodate evening and weekend events.
·      Reports for work shifts in a dependable and timely fashion, in order to minimize the interruption or delay of regular output for the department.
·      As needed, works outside the framework of a normal work schedule in order to complete projects of heavy demand or to meet student schedules.

RECORDS MAINTENANCE
·      Maintains Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reports.
·      Maintains CSAP database.
·      Writes, with the Sustainability Outreach Coordinator , the OS Annual Sustainability Report.

TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
·      Demonstrates and maintains technical knowledge of the job and of related procedures and policies in order to provide quality support to the department and its constituents.
·      Begins assignments without prompting, maintains productivity in both quantity and quality of work, and appropriately plans, organizes and prioritizes work in order to maximize the use of department resources.
·      Independently contributes ideas and process improvements, and looks for creative solutions and better ways of doing things, in order to meet the goals of continuous improvement.
·      Identifies, analyzes and addresses problems in order to resolve issues whenever possible in a way that minimizes the negative impact on the organization.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

·      Advanced degree in environmental studies, sustainability, or related field required, or Bachelor degree in environmental studies, sustainability, or related field and 2-3 years related work experience.
·      Must have working knowledge of social media; website programming capabilities a plus.
·      Must have knowledge of computer operations and programs sufficient to coordinate all record keeping requirements with vision sufficient to read computer screen and printed materials.
·      Must have excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills and the demonstrated ability to manage timetables and detailed paper work.
·      Must possess physical mobility sufficient to tour campus, work on the organic farm, carry materials for events, etc. Must have good hearing and speaking skills.
·      A record of organizational leadership, and familiarity with institutional operations in higher education. The candidate will have strong written and oral communication and interpersonal and skills and a demonstrated ability to coordinate activities within a community of diverse participants. Grant writing experience desirable.

Campaign Organizing Internship, Corporate Accountability International (Boston, MA)

For 38 years, Corporate Accountability International has successfully challenged corporations like Nestlé, General Electric, and Philip Morris to halt abusive practices that threaten human rights, public health, the environment and our democracy. The organization is leading campaigns challenging some of the world’s most powerful industries in food and agriculture, water and tobacco. Our internships are a unique opportunity to gain valuable organizing and non-profit experience. This is a hands-on program, designed to mentor and cultivate students interested in social justice, strengthen their understanding of a fast-paced campaign organization and prepare them with the skills and experience necessary to challenge corporate abuse.

The Campaign Organizing Internship is a skills-building internship in which interns will take on significant projects to advance Corporate Accountability International’s mission in one of the three campaign areas.  Interns will participate in organizing efforts of the Think Outside the Bottle and Public Water Works! Campaigns to challenge corporate control of water, the Value [the] Meal campaign to challenge corporate abuse of our food, or the campaign to Challenge Big Tobacco.  The projects will be coupled with training sessions on  action planning, campaign research, media outreach, fundraising, and many other topics.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with the National Organizers and Campaign Directors to organize activists at the local, regional, national or international level;
  • Outreach targeted constituencies to get people involved in the Think Outside the Bottle Campaign, the Value [the] Meal campaign, or the campaign to Challenge Big Tobacco to develop Corporate Accountability International’s core of activists;
  • Recruit activists by organizing and participating in campaign actions and organizing events;
  • Respond to requests for information and management of campaign materials;
  • Design and layout organizing materials for different constituencies;
  • Provide administrative support to National Organizers on short term campaign projects;
  • Participate in organizational building activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated commitment to corporate accountability and progressive social change;
  • Highly effective written and verbal communication skills;
  • Organizational skills and the ability to juggle several tasks while meeting deadlines;
  • Experience in a high-energy campaign or non-profit setting preferable;

Clean Energy Intern, Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) (Boston, MA)

The Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) seeks a clean energy intern to work in its office in Boston starting in July 2015. MAPC is a regional planning agency serving the people who live and work in Metropolitan Boston. Our mission is to promote smart growth and regional cooperation, which includes protecting the environment, supporting economic development, encouraging sustainable land use, improving transportation, bolstering affordable housing, ensuring public safety, advancing equity and opportunity among people of all backgrounds, and fostering collaboration among municipalities.

The clean energy intern will have significant research responsibilities and will work directly with the Clean Energy Division team to develop and implement MAPC’s energy projects throughout the MAPC region. The intern will provide direct support to MAPC’s regional energy projects, as well as municipal energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. This work will include but is not limited to research and drafting memoranda on energy technologies and MAPC energy projects, researching utility programs, organizing stakeholder meetings, and researching innovative opportunities for community energy programs in the Greater Boston region.

The intern must be willing to commit 15 to 20 hours per week and be enrolled as a student at the time of the internship. This is a paid position. This position is non-exempt under the guidelines of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Energy Conservation Manager, Austin Community College (Austin, TX)

The Energy Conservation Manager will be responsible for analyzing current energy usage and developing the district’s energy management plan in order to provide quality learning environment with cost effective energy utilization.The Energy Conservation Manager will collaborate with all College constituencies to develop a working model for the integration of energy management and other sustainable concepts and practices into the operations of the College.  The Energy Conservation Manager will be tasked with advancing the energy component of ACC’s Climate Action Plan. The Energy Conservation Manager will work in collaboration with various departments across the district, including Building & Grounds Department, Facilities Department & outside vendors and contractors and students.  The Energy Conservation Manager will identify desirable energy conservation initiatives; assess cost effectiveness, technical feasibility, and impact; and gain acceptance by the College Community.
