Climate Adaptation Project Manager, Cambridge Systematics (Open Location)

We are seeking a project manager and technical expert with an understanding of the impacts of climate change on transportation and a broad understanding of risk management and transportation planning to lead extreme weather and climate change vulnerability assessments and adaptation strategy projects for regional, state, Federal, and international clients. Our work focuses on helping our clients understand the risks of extreme weather and climate change to multimodal transportation systems and cost-effectively integrate resiliency measures (adaptation strategies) into transportation planning and decision-making processes. The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of transportation planning and policy and/or civil engineering work experience with strong communication skills, project management experience, business development experience, understanding of the application of climate data to the assessment of infrastructure and operational vulnerabilities, knowledge of asset management for transportation infrastructure, understanding of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and broad transportation planning experience. Candidates will be expected to lead or support extreme weather and climate change vulnerability and adaptation studies, as well as lead or support general transportation planning projects. Experience with disaster risk management planning is a plus. Work assignments may include project management, performing research and data analysis, facilitating stakeholder and/or technical expert dialogues and workshops, preparing and delivering presentations, and documenting findings and recommendations. Experience working with the U.S. DOT, state DOTs, MPOs, transit agencies, and/or multilateral/regional investment banks is highly desirable. Climate Protection Action Committee (Cambridge, MA)

The City of Cambridge is seeking candidates to fill three vacancies on the Climate Protection Action Committee (CPAC), the advisory committee to the City Manager on climate change planning and implementation. 

The committee, which consists of residents and representatives of the universities, the business community, and community organizations, advises the City on climate change policy and implementation.


Cambridge has been working on climate change action since 1999. A Climate Protection Plan was adopted in 2002 by the City Council with an initial target year of 2010 for greenhouse gas emission reductions. The committee is currently working on implementing new goals and objectives, identifying effective strategies, policies, and programs; and developing metrics. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and and preparing for climate change will require concerted action by the entire community, and the committee is an important element of the effort to help residents, businesses, institutions, and organizations incorporate energy efficiency, renewable energy, and other measures into their homes and work places as well as to prepare for climate change impacts.


The committee generally meets on the second Thursday of the month, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, at City Hall Annex, 344 Broadway. Any Cambridge resident or representative of a business, institution, or organization based in Cambridge who would like to work to address climate change is welcome to apply.

Agency Description
The Environmental and Transportation Planning Division is responsible for improving the city’s quality of life by working to protect and improve the city’s environment and create a more sustainable community through initiatives on transportation, energy, and climate change.
 
The divisions’ sustainability planning activities cover transportation planning and implementation, with an emphasis on bicycle, pedestrian, and transit modes; energy efficiency and renewable energy planning and implementation; climate protection and preparedness planning and implementation.
 
Intern Responsibilities
The Sustainability Intern will assist the Environmental and Transportation Planning Division staff primarily on climate protection and preparedness projects, including local energy planning.  This will involve implementation of programs and actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with activities in the community and municipal operations.  The intern may also be called upon to assist on other environmental projects such as the review of major development projects, responses to public inquiries, and investigation and remediation of site contamination.  This is a chance to work on a wide range of municipal sustainability initiatives.
 
Desired Skills and Interests
Ability to use various computer software including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.  Knowledge and interest in the technical and policy basis of climate change, energy, air quality, and sustainability.   Interest in community process and participation is also desired.
 
WORK-STUDY ELIGIBLE STUDENTS ARE PREFERRED, BUT NON-WORK STUDY STUDENTS WILL BE CONSIDERED.

The Billion Dollar Green Challenge, which helps colleges and universities invest in energy efficiency and resource efficiency projects on campus,has been creating a web tool called the Green Revolving Investment Tracking System (GRITS) over the past year and now has a working beta version of the tool. The purpose of GRITS is to help colleges and other institutions manage and track their energy, financial, and carbon savings from energy efficiency projects. We are looking to add a developer that is skilled in Ruby on  Rails to work with the existing beta version to build out a final platform that can be used by early September.

Educational Program Coordinator – theMOVE (Cambridge, MA)

theMOVE (getoutma.org) organizes farm-volunteer workdays for diverse urban groups throughout Metro Boston, to connect our participants hands-on with fresh food, and with the labor and land that sustain us. We focus most of our outreach towards low income communities, people of color, and youth. We primarily work with schools and community organizations to set up trips for their groups, but we also host occasional open sign-up trips for individual adults and families. We are seeking an energetic Educational Program Coordinator to coordinate and lead our trips this season.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
The responsibilities of the position will vary, but will foremost comprise the coordination of farm-volunteer trips:
(a) match/schedule groups with appropriate farms, and plan out trips using varied transportation;
(b) facilitate workdays, oversee the work, and keep volunteers motivated and cared for (we will strive to have
two staff members on all trips; the program coordinator will oversee at least 2/3 of them);
(c) lead reflective educational activities (including pre/post sessions at groups’ program sites across Boston);
(d) administer a simple impact survey at end of trips, and tabulate data.
 Additionally, the educational programs coordinator will:
(a) conduct outreach to community groups to get new audiences excited about farm-volunteering;
(b) develop reflective/educational activities for use on trips, to expand our existing curriculum;
(c) refer participants to further community engagement/education opportunities, and develop systems to do so;
(d) support fundraising and community event organizing efforts, as needed.
COMPENSATION: $16 per hour (no health/vacation benefits)
HOURS: 40 hours per week (flexible scheduling – will range 30-50 hours/week)
DURATION: May 1 to November 15

Team Green Sense Counselor (Cambridge)

 The City of Cambridge DPW department seeks a qualified individual to supervise a six-week summer youth program.  The supervisor will work with a group of approximately 12 high school students to lead and coordinate educational activities to support learning and work objectives related to energy efficiency and environmental sustainability in an urban setting, and to help these students develop a final project that reflects what they have learned by participating in the program. Experience working with youth (ages 14-18) in informal or experiential education setting.  Demonstrated experience with group facilitation and team-building.  College coursework in environmental science, urban planning, or education preferred. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Community and Partnership Manager – Climate CoLab (Cambridge, MA)

The goal of the Climate CoLab is to harness the collective intelligence of thousands of people from all around the world to address global climate change. The Community and Partnership Manager will build and sustain the on-line community as a key enabler of the project’s overall research mission; establish relationships with partner organizations and maintain existing relationships; work closely with multiple Climate CoLab contests and volunteers who run them; monitor and evaluate community growth and assess which community approaches lead to development of more effective solutions; coordinate with and contribute to social science experiments which will be a key part of the project; create and implement community engagement and partnership development plan; manage existing network of partners/volunteers and the online community; undertake initial web and email outreach to prospective partners/new members; collaborate with other key groups; and coordinate with and contribute to the research team undertaking social science observation and experimentation.

REQUIREMENTS: an undergraduate degree (advanced degree preferred) and experience building successful on-line communities and/or successful organizational relationships. Five years of experience in marketing, management of on-line communities, or social media is preferred. Enthusiasm for and commitment to addressing climate change is highly desirable, as is knowledge of or experience with collective intelligence/crowdsourcing initiatives. Must possess outstanding interpersonal, organizational, and oral and written communication skills; the ability to work independently as part of a cross-disciplinary team that includes faculty, staff, and students; and the ability to work virtually across geographic distances.

Environmental Educator (Boston, Cambridge, Somerville)

Environment Science Educator needed for the following school year.

“e” inc. — the environmental learning and action center, now in its ninth year, is currently seeking an environment science or biology teacher interested in working in urban settings within Greater Boston. “e” inc. is a nonprofit whose mission is to educate and support children and adults to be lifetime citizen environmentalists. We accomplish this by teaching the deep science that comprises natural resource systems and by helping individuals, groups, and classes create and support actions that foster sustainability locally and/or globally

All candidates must be mature and focused, able to negotiate a role within a larger urban institution, and be comfortable working independently. We supply lessons that: (1) are engrossing and age appropriate, (2) build science skills, and (3) motivate students to use their science confidently as they formulate and carry out sustainability projects.

Applicants need to be comfortable with a wide range of teaching techniques from inquiry- based challenges and experiments to creatively involving children in data collection. All candidates must be conversant in one or more of these topics: oceans, rainforest biodiversity, New England habitats, animal behavior, the basic science of energy and renewable resources, climate systems and global warming/climate change.

“e” Inc. has that following part-time opening (20 hr per week) that we are seeking to fill:

1) Kids Green the Schools Educator: Earth Action Inc. is spearheading its new residency program, Kids Green the Schools (KGTS), at 10 local public elementary schools. Each residency will take place 1 morning/week and follow a 7 week cycle based on the number of classrooms served. KGTS Educators are assigned to specific schools and will teach both science and the action projects to green the school. The Kids Green their Schools curriculum is provided. We have an initial three sites that we are looking to place an educator in.

There is a possibility of adding on more sites and programs in the coming months, as well as summer programs. Special consideration will be given to candidates who have had experience working with middle school aged students.

You must be able to commit from January until the end of school year. Access to a bike or car for travel to some of our sites will be helpful for efficient use of your time. However, most teaching sites are accessible via MBTA, but not all. Sites are in Boston, Cambridge, and Somerville.
