The final President’s Picnic of 2016 was held in Grafton on Wednesday, June 15th, a lovely and sunny conclusion to the annual year-end event series.
Drinks and condiments were served in bulk, which cut back on the amount of plastic and other packaging waste produced during the event.
Attendees were encouraged to BYOP — bring your own plates — as another way to reduce waste. Over 80 people brought their own dishes.
Anyone who brought their own dishes, cups, or utensils was entered into a raffle for a special prize. The first 50 visitors to our table also got a prize automatically!
Lillian of Student Services at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine won the top prize – a reusable, stainless steel lunch kit and utensil set!
Recycling interns helped sort recycling and compost at special Zero Waste Stations.
6 bags of recycling were collected, weighing about 48 pounds, while there were 40 pounds of food waste. Trash from the entire event fit into a tiny bag and weighed less than 2 pounds!
The lunch was catered by Loaves and Fishes.

The Office of the Provost is pleased to announce that this year’s Tufts Century Ride will take place on Saturday, September 17, 2016! Registration is now open through September 2nd.
The Tufts Century Ride is approximately a 100 mile bike ride open to the entire university community with stops on the Medford/Somerville, Grafton, and Boston campuses (i.e., Tufts Century). For those who prefer a shorter ride, there will also be route options available beginning at approximately 20 miles. In collaboration with the Tufts Cycling Team, the Tufts Century Ride is meant to provide a fun way for community members to connect, and a unique way to see our three campuses.

Carol Ellis accepts the certificate for Tisch Library
This spring, the Office of Sustainability finally launched a new program to recognize, support and promote offices that are engaging in sustainable practices.
The Green Office Certification program has four levels of certification allowing offices to be recognized for their current conservation actions, while still providing a goal to work towards (Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum). On Tuesday, May 8th, at the annual luncheon for Eco-Ambassadors, four offices were awarded a certificate that will be displayed in their office to reflect ongoing efforts in energy reduction, waste conservation and sustainable purchasing.
Congratulations to the Tisch Library for being the first office to achieve Gold level Green Office Certification, and to the Department of Environmental and Population Health, Ginn Library at the Fletcher School and Tufts Renewable Energy & Applied Photonics (REAP) Labs for achieving the Bronze level of office sustainability!
If your office or deparment would like to participate and begin the process of Green Office Certification, just follow this link! Any office or department on all three campuses can participate. Every year, your office can resubmit the survey to evaluate improvements made in the workplace and help Tufts University become a more sustainable campus!
