Sustainability Coordinator, Outreach and Engagement, University of Virginia

Sustainability Coordinator, James Hopkins University

The Associate Sustainability Outreach Coordinator (ASOC) will assist with communications efforts, campus outreach and education programming, and campus performance reporting. The ASOC will assist the office with marketing and communications, event planning, and outreach and engagement with the Johns Hopkins Community. Additionally, the ASOC will help coordinate data collection, analysis, and reporting on campus progress, such as energy, greenhouse gas emissions, recycling and waste minimization, water, and office supplies.

Overview
The USGBC Massachusetts Chapter promotes and advocates for green buildings throughout the state. We support the professional development of green building professionals and the credential maintenance of LEED Accredited Professionals and Green Associates in Massachusetts. As a chapter of the larger national US Green Building Council, we advocate for state and local laws and regulations that promote green buildings, sustainable development and healthy materials choices. We are expanding our capacity to make a difference in the green building industry in the state. We have a staffed Green Schools Program which is a wonderful new avenue for us to connect with a broader constituency, outside of the building industry. We want to connect to more schools stakeholders and grow our capacity to green the schools of Massachusetts. We are hiring an Outreach & Communications Manager to support this vital work.
 
Job Summary
The Outreach & Communications Manager (OCM) is a part-time position responsible for managing all recurring organizational communications and stakeholder engagement. The position will cultivate community and build our member & funder base through consistent communication and promotion of our activities.
 
The USGBC MA takes a collaborative and whole-systems approach to leadership and planning among our stakeholders, and we are looking for someone who has the experience and desire to work in a shared responsibility environment, and who is flexible and committed to the overall advancement of the organization.
 
The OCM position is a critical role responsible for raising the organizational profile and generate greater interest in our programming on behalf of the green building industry in Massachusetts. We are looking for a dedicated, experienced, and enthusiastic relationship-builder and communications specialist with the commitment, skills, and desire required to continue growing and sustaining the resources USGBC MA needs to fulfill its mission. The position will be supervised by the Executive Director and work closely with the Green Schools Program Manager.
 
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
The Outreach & Communications Manager will have two primary areas of responsibility:
Outreach
  • Cultivate and nurture relationships with current and potential donors as well as outreach to the professional community (collaborate with ED)
  • Staff public events to ensure the Chapter message gets to stakeholders
  • Serve as direct contact for members, event registrations and website questions
  • Monitor trends in the community and adapt strategies as necessary
 
Communications and Documentation
  • Design, develop and drive strategy and content for all online & offline communications for the purposes of documenting and promoting our work, and growing our base of followers and supporters
  • Manage the website & scrolling news items
  • Coordinate the documentation of all programming onto our blog etc.
  • Manage social media pages/streams
  • Build relationships with community stake holders and/or partners to advance the mission and fundraising goals of the organization
  • Enhance membership orientation and recruitment and correct technical issues with member profiles or use of the website and its resources
 
In addition, the OCM will play a co-equal role in staff-wide requirements:
  • Contribute to fundraising efforts by participating in strategic fundraising planning, meetings, events and activities;
  • Co-Plan Organizational Development, working with the team to help USGBC MA continue to grow and evolve to meet the needs of our network and our mission, including regular staff meetings, and organizational planning and evaluation retreats;
  • Demonstrate leadership and solidarity in network development, engaging and growing the diverse spectrum of stakeholders and communities that USGBC MA seeks to serve and empower.
 
In order to fulfill the stated responsibilities of the role, the ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:
  • Passionate commitment to the principles of sustainability, regeneration, green building, and community development;
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in the areas listed above under “Primary Duties & Responsibilities”;
  • Enthusiasm for fundraising, writing, organizational development, and sustaining and improving the overall health of the organization;
  • Strong online communications skills, including email, social media, web publishing and analytics; HTML, WordPress or other website editing skills a strong plus;
  • Detail-oriented, thorough; nothing slips by;
  • Prolific and efficient writing skills; ability to write in a variety of styles for multiple audiences;
  • Fluency with graphic design programs and the creation of compelling graphics for marketing purposes;
  • Extensive knowledge of and experience using CRM software and spreadsheets;
  • Successful experience coordinating volunteers and other unpaid stakeholders;
  • Experience working successfully on a multi-location team;
  • Strong work ethic, highly self-motivated;
  • Flexibility in the job role, understanding the need to dynamically respond to evolving and USGBC MA needs that are often driven by external events and opportunities;
  • Willing and able to travel occasionally.
 
Ideally, also:
  • Experienced with green building practices and community sustainability;
  • Experience in association management and engagement;
  • Comfort and experience in public speaking roles;
  • Multimedia skills a plus, including audio, video, and image editing capabilities;
  • Sense of humor!
 
Compensation
$20,000 starting annual salary (for 20h/wk);

Transportation Demand Management Outreach Coordinator, Duke University

Duke University’s Parking & Transportation Services office is seeking a part-time TDM Outreach Coordinator to assist with ongoing marketing efforts and customer service activities related to Duke’s sustainable transportation programs.  The part-time Transportation Demand Management (TDM) Outreach Coordinator will work up to 20 hours/week helping the Transportation Demand Manager to promote alternative commute options to a population of approximately 50,000 students and employees via print and digital marketing, special events, social media campaigns, and other campus communication channels.

Sustainability Outreach and Communications Coordinator, University of Florida

The University of Florida Office of Sustainability is seeking an Outreach and Communications Coordinator. This Coordinator promotes sustainability on campus through the effective and creative communication of sustainability principles, campus sustainability initiatives, and institutional best practices in ways that engage and motivate the full range of the campus community (faculty, staff, students) and the community-at-large. In addition, the Coordinator will be required to collaboratively oversee the creation of behavior change campaigns targeting all members of the campus community (faculty, staff, students) that show progress toward campus-wide sustainability goals and commitments. The Coordinator will be expected to be a strong member of a collaborative team within the Office of Sustainability working to be both a resource and inspiration for the campus community as it works to make the University of Florida a model and national leader in sustainability.

Various Positions, Amp

The following 3 positions are open at the recently released tech startup called Amp, which is like Yelp for sustainability resources. Our mission is to organize the best links, media and documents for the students, intrapreneurs and entrepreneurs driving business in the way of social and environmental progress. Technical co-founder
We currently have two co-founders – one with an IT project management background (John Lehnert), and one with a market research and business development background (Sarah McKinney). We’re seeking a technical co-founder to join our team who is passionate about social impact, a skilled coder, a solid communicator, and someone who has a strong desire to contribute to the company’s ongoing strategy. We’re prepared to offer equity, and are open to a part-time situation to begin with while we continue to gain traction with the understanding being that it would become full-time gig when things take off. We’re based in Santa Monica, and would love to work with someone locally but that is not required.
The core technologies used to develop Amp’s site are: PHP 5.4+, CAKE 2.0, MySQL5.1+, jQuery (Rate-it & Tag-it), HTML5, CSS3 and GIT. The individual we’re looking for must have experience with PHP, CAKE Framework and Amazon Web Services. Having NoSQL experience would be a plus.
Community Engagement Intern
We are seeking an intern who is able to help us keep up with the pace of our user growth for approximately 10 hours/week. This person must be passionate about sustainability and enjoy tracking new resources in the space (e.g., events, websites, reports, companies, etc.). You will be responsible for staying on top of new resources to add to Amp’s directory, editing and approving resources that are submitted by other users, and leveraging social media to drive traffic to the site and increase engagement (i.e., ratings & reviews). Being very savvy with social media is important, as is having a positive attitude, being a self-starter, and having a dependable work ethic. We’re based in Santa Monica, but this position can be done remotely with regular email and phone correspondence expected.
College Outreach Intern
We are looking for an intern to help us manage outreach efforts to various universities and student networks focused on sustainability for approximately 10 hours/week. Students are constantly searching for information and resources, and creating content they could either sell through our PDF exchange or download, building upon learning instead of duplicating it. You will be responsible for going through our growing spreadsheet of contacts, reaching out to new contacts, and getting creative with ways to engage the various student populations. It’s important that this individual be passionate about sustainability, and be an outgoing go-getter that believes in Amp’s mission and feels genuinely excited to help spread the word. Solid communication skills and dependable work ethic are a must. We’re based in Santa Monica, but this position can be done remotely with regular email and phone correspondence expected.

Sustainability Specialist (CA)

 

University of California, Riverside

Under the general direction of the Director of Sustainability, the Sustainability Specialist administers the Waste Diversion Education Program to include data collection, analysis, reporting, training, and communication. The Specialist is also responsible for peer education, advertising, and outreach to promote sustainability initiatives, recruit student volunteers, increase awareness of campus programs, and plan weekly outreach and special events. The Specialist maintains the department’s social media presence by updating the department’s website and blog page.

Organic Land Care Program Coordinator – NOFA/Mass

Deadline for application is February 17.

The NOFA/Mass Organic Land Care Program, in its 13th year, is the statewide educational and outreach resource for organic landscaping information. The coordinator position is for a self-starter with flexible hours who can not only develop and envision the job, but set his/her own schedule and coordinate/collaborate with NOFA/Mass staff, NOFA Accredited Organic Land Care Professionals (AOLCPs), other industry organizations and non-profits, and collaborate with CT NOFA and the Organic Land Care Program committee.

Position requires working closely with NOFA/Mass Education/Executive Director, Organic Land Care Program Manager (in CT), and volunteer NOFA/Mass Organic Land Care committee to:

  • Develop, publicize, market and fully coordinate two professional-level trainings in Organic Land Care (one half-day intensive and one full day on Organic Turf) as well as educational programming and outreach events targeted at homeowners/ consumers (as deemed appropriate and where time allows)
  • Maintain a NOFA/Mass Organic Land Care steering committee composed primarily of AOLCPs to help guide program development and sustainability and to build up the NOFA/Mass volunteer base on the land care topic
  • Direct inquiries from the landscaper and consumer/homeowner community toward appropriate resources
  • Collaborate with NOFA/Mass outreach staff and CT NOFA staff to promote and advocate for organic land care topics at OLC related events, trade shows and conferences

This part-time job will require approximately 300 hours per year, with the majority of hours worked between Oct. 1 and April 1. Starting compensation is $13/hour. Working with NOFA/Mass is for folks who have an entrepreneurial bent, see this work as part of a living in the world of organic sustainability and enjoy working with others who have a passion for social change.

Skills required:
·       MS Word and Excel
·       Online social media networking proficiency
·       Interest in / basic familiarity with topics in organic land care and farming

Skills preferred:
·      Accredited Organic Land Care Professional strongly preferred. The ideal candidate has direct experience in landscaping, horticulture, nursery production and/or soil fertility
·      InDesign, Quark, PhotoShop or other design software experience helpful
·      Marketing, outreach or community organizing experience is also helpful

Environmental Educator (Boston, Ma)

Conservation Begins Here.
The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is seeking qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire local high school students for the school year.  SCA is America’s #1 Conservation Service Organization.

The SCA is looking for an educator to work with 5 SCA local Boston High School ambassadors after school and on Saturdays. The educator will be responsible for leading, mentoring and guiding these students in learning about local environmental issues. Educator will also help students develop plans for the delivery of lessons to afterschool students ages 6-13. Successful completion of this role will lead to summer work as an SCA Field Leader in Boston.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead Boston Outreach Ambassadors  (BOOYA) in creating educational activities for delivery to elementary and middle school children
  • Plan regular weekly lessons and activities for Crew Members
  • Train and supervise safety, activity and proper tool use of crew members and volunteers during monthly service projects
  • Follow all SCA policies & procedures as required for the position
  • Manage budget and necessary purchasing for crew and project
  • Manage relationships with agency partner
  • Facilitate crew operations: tools & equipment, work schedule, etc.
  • Manage all medical and first aid aspects
  • Communicate with full time SCA field staff as required
  • Supervise crew members during the work day
  • Organize & lead (and in some cases guide members through these processes) monthly service      projects in collaboration with SCA and Audubon staff
  • Complete required program reporting and documentation
  • Supervise and work with crew in updates of Boston Facebook and Twitter Accounts
  • Pick up rental minivan for transportation of youth as needed

Qualifications:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Must possess current First Aid certification & CPR by the start of the orientation training
  • Documented experience working with youth or young adults (ages 14-18)
  • Experience as a teacher or leader in an informal or formal educational environment
  • Experience with conservation work skills or related skills, i.e. trail maintenance, trail construction,      chainsaw, carpentry, landscaping, and gardening
  • Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements. The      employee must occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more
  • Must have personal housing arrangements in Boston
  • Bachelors or higher in environmental or biological science/ education, informal/outdoor education
  • Experience working with students 14-19 required; additional experience working with youth ages 5-13 (esp. 10-13) preferred
  • Superior skill in working with Facebook and Twitter Blogging and Instagram
  • Experience developing and leading interactive hands-on science based activities required
  • Excellent communication skills needed
  • Valid driver¹s license and MVR that meets SCA standards required
  • Ability to meet SCA¹s criminal background check standards

Compensation:
Hours: 3pm-6pm Tuesdays and Thursdays; Saturdays (exact times TBD) plus out of work planning time.
Pay: $115/day

Recruitment Outreach Intern – Green Corps (Boston, MA)

The mission of Green Corps is to train organizers, provide field support for today’s critical environmental campaigns, and graduate activists who possess the skills, temperament, and commitment to fight and win tomorrow’s environmental battles. The Recruitment Outreach Interns will help coordinate the following projects:

· Event Planning: The interns will coordinate the planning of Green Corps’ 2nd Round Interview weekends with an expected attendance of 300 candidates. This includes duties such as VIP outreach for invited guests and major donors, weekend locations and logistics, travel and housing arrangements for candidates and materials creation and duplication.

· Online Outreach: The interns will coordinate our online recruitment campaign to raise the visibility of Green Corps’ Field School for Environmental Organizing. This will include planning and implementing targeted outreach to websites, job boards, blogs, and social-networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook.

· Career Center and Campus Outreach: Interns will contact career centers across the country to coordinate recruitment, visibility events and on-campus interviews. Interns will also recruit top student leaders for the Green Corps program with campus outreach.

Hours The start and end dates are flexible, although most interns begin in January and work through March, with the possibility of continuing year-round. Interns typically work between 10-20 hours/week, and the level of commitment can be tailored to your schedule.

Qualifications We are looking for people who are serious about saving the planet, and have a desire to strengthen and grow the environmental movement.

Benefits The internships are unpaid, but interns are given the opportunity to audit portions of Green Corps’ August Introductory Classroom Training, which features training from top environmental leaders in organizing, advocacy, and leadership skills. Course Credit supervision is also available.
