The Environmental and Transportation Planning Division is responsible for improving the city’s quality of life by working to protect and improve the city’s environment and create a more sustainable community through initiatives on transportation, energy, and climate change.
The divisions’ sustainability planning activities cover transportation planning and implementation, with an emphasis on bicycle, pedestrian, and transit modes; energy efficiency and renewable energy planning and implementation; climate protection and preparedness planning and implementation.
The Sustainability Intern will assist the Environmental and Transportation Planning Division staff primarily on climate protection and preparedness projects, including local energy planning. This will involve implementation of programs and actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with activities in the community and municipal operations. The intern may also be called upon to assist on other environmental projects such as the review of major development projects, responses to public inquiries, and investigation and remediation of site contamination. This is a chance to work on a wide range of municipal sustainability initiatives.
Desired Skills and Interests
Ability to use various computer software including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases. Knowledge and interest in the technical and policy basis of climate change, energy, air quality, and sustainability. Interest in community process and participation is also desired.
WORK-STUDY ELIGIBLE STUDENTS ARE PREFERRED, BUT NON-WORK STUDY STUDENTS WILL BE CONSIDERED.
Starting Date: 06-01-13
Ending Date: 05/31/14 unless extended by Department
Hours: 37.5 hours per week, not including holidays summer; 10hours/week during the school year. Hours are flexible, however. A summer-only internship is not available.

Ceres mobilizes a powerful network of investors, companies and public interest groups to accelerate and expand the adoption of sustainable business practices and solutions to build a healthy global economy. Ceres’ interns support program staff working with a wide variety of constituents within the Ceres network: environmental activists, investors, funders, and corporations. While providing some administrative support, interns will primarily work in one of the following areas using skills in research, project coordination, IT and communications.
Description & Responsibilities:
- Investor Network on Climate Risk (INCR), a $10 trillion network of investors which promotes better understanding and advocacy concerning the risks of climate change among institutional investors
- Industry programs, which seek to create positive change in specific industries such as insurance, oil and gas, and electric power
- Corporate accountability and coalition programs, which build Ceres’ capacity as a force for change through corporate sustainability reporting and stakeholder engagement with companies
- Ceres’ Policy program which engages business leaders to support the passage of climate legislation
- Development, which focuses on working with individual, corporate, and foundation donors
- Communications, which deals with press relations and print, web, and email communications
- Conference, which focuses on Ceres’ signature event bringing together business leaders and thought leaders
Internship positions are full time (40 hours/week) and will last eight (8) weeks; exact start and end dates could be flexible, but our actual Summer Program begins June 3, 2013 and ends July 26, 2013. Ceres provides a $3300 stipend and a “T” pass for approximately nine interns. We are looking for both undergraduate and graduate students.

Since the beginning of March, the three Working Groups of the Campus Sustainability Council have been meeting to discuss the current state of energy/emissions, water, and waste policies and practices at Tufts, and to create new policy measures in these areas.
The Waste Working Group met for the first time on March 12th and reviewed its roles and responsibilities, which include collaborating to create university-wide solid waste reduction/avoidance goals, presenting goals to the main Council for feedback and approval, and creating strategies to meet the goals, including implementation planning.
The group reviewed how Tufts manages its waste as well as consumption data. They learned that causes of waste output variations are usually hard to determine but that waste increases noticeably during a strong economy and times of high consumption, and that reduced consumption and reusing materials could impact waste output considerably. The group reviewed the waste breakdown for the past several years on the Boston and Medford campuses. Finally, the group looked into strategies for waste reduction. The waste management hierarchy follows, from most preferred to least preferred:
- Source reduction and reuse
- Energy recovery
- Treatment and disposal
In the second meeting, the Waste Working Group decided to break down into smaller sub-groups, and the third meeting was spent working within those groups. The groups, along with their objectives, are:
- Waste Management
- To identify gaps and weaknesses in current waste management and address gaps, and to achieve uniformity in waste management practices wherever possible
- Group will cover practices and metrics
- Source Reduction
- Group will impact waste reduction and responsible choices through purchasing contracts and client interface
- Labs and Hospitals
- Group will focus on laboratory and hospital waste management including animal facilities
- Marketing and Education
- Group will raise the level of awareness for waste reduction across all Tufts communities through behavior change
The working group members are now in the process of brainstorming goals and areas of policy change within their subgroups. Once this process is complete, the sub-groups will discuss their findings and the Waste Working Group will make a report to the Sustainability Council. The working group is co-chaired by Gretchen Kaufman, Assistant Professor of Wildlife Medicine in the Department of Environmental and Population Health and Director of the Tufts Center for Conservation Medicine at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, and Dawn Quirk, Waste Reduction Program Manager in Tufts Facilities Services.
