THE WELCOME PROJECT

The Welcome Project is looking for volunteers for its after-school youth
program, The Mystic Wizards. Flexible commitment and open to your input. This
after-school program meant for 8 – 12 year olds who are mostly residents of the
Mystic Housing Development. The program meets on Wednesday and Thursday
afternoons from 3 – 5 pm. You are not obligated to come both days or even every
week, as long as you make your availability known to me, the coordinator. The
first hour is structured homework help but the second hour is free and the
activities done will be entirely up to volunteer staff. I will be running the
program but would like to get lots of input and ideas from other volunteers as
to activities for this hour. The students are mostly immigrants and so cultural
activities will be a big part of it, but also games, crafts, life skills
activities, maybe yoga or health-oriented activities… the options are endless!
If you love kids, teaching, and/or are interested in developing your own youth
curriculum, please contact me at LChidsey@BU.edu.

Be a Second Grade Math Tutor in the Medford Public Schools!

You will be matched with a second grader and will meet with your student two times per week for 30 – 45 minutes per session. Math concepts will be reinforced through practice and games.   For many children having the one-on-one attention can make all the difference.  No previous tutor experience is necessary and training will be provided. Sessions may be scheduled before or after the student’s school day. The program runs from October to June.   Tutoring will take place at the Roberts Elementary School, the Columbus Elementary School, and the Brooks Elementary School. (All are reachable via public transportation and we can provide you with bus information on how to get from Tufts to the elementary school at which you will be tutoring.)
Sign up now to join us for a volunteer training session in October.   For more information on how to become a tutor, please email medfordvolunteers@gmail.com
