We are excited to announce that the Office of Residential Life and Learning has accepted the proposal for a sustainability-themed housing unit for next year. It will be a suite in Latin Way, with 10 available spots.

Living in the Sustainability House will be similar to living in one of the existing special interest houses. Instead of focusing on a language or religion, it is meant to be an intentional community of people who are all interested in issues surrounding sustainability. The house will be filled with student of a broad range of interests and levels background knowledge, from those who started their high school environmental club to those just beginning their journey. Everyone in the house will be required to either work on sustainability-related research or work with the Sustainable Action Squad (a group of student dedicated to catalyzing environmental changes on campus), and generally be involved in the sustainability movement at Tufts.
The Sustainability House is also intended as a focal point for the environmental community on the Tufts campus. It will bring Eco-friendly students, organizations, and faculty together to promote the spread of knowledge and passion for sustainable living. The house will provide a living space for environmentally interested students, and a meeting place for the larger Tufts community. The goals of the founders of the house include bringing together people with similar interests in a living environment, fostering the environmental community on campus, providing an opportunity for residents to learn new ways to live sustainably alongside their housemates, providing space for environmental groups to host programs for the entire Tufts community, and bringing together various environmentally focused groups on campus and encouraging cooperation between them.

The application is due March 1st at midnight and can be found at:

From Students for a Just and Stable Future:

This is it. The time to break the silence on climate in the Massachusetts senatorial election is now.

As Bill McKibben, James Hansen, and many other respected climate scientists and leaders have made clear, time is running out to take action and preserve a livable climate.

Climate change is the biggest threat ever faced by human beings — yet candidates and the media barely address this indisputable fact on the campaign trail. Politicians and the mainstream media are skirting the issue of climate change — or fail to mention it at all — even as the climate crisis threatens to spin out of control

From October 23rd through the 30th, at Government Center in Boston, Massachusetts residents will participate in a round-the-clock Vigil to End Climate Silence and call for building a just and livable future for all. Rallies, with keynote speakers, will be held at strategic times to bring as many of your voices as possible to this call to action. Click here to take part in this vigil.

Our ask is that Elizabeth Warren and Scott Brown speak up about the issue of climate change between now and the election — particularly at the October 30th debate — even if the debate moderator or other journalists do not ask them about climate change. We want them to acknowledge that the climate crisis is the biggest issue of our time and that they will make it a top policy priority if elected, starting with voting to repeal the billions of dollars in federal subsidies and giveaways to the fossil fuel industry – the very industry that is destroying our climate and our future.

We’ve learned that we can’t merely vote and then wait for politicians to lead us. From the civil rights to the suffragette movements, we have seen that we must lead them. What better place to take this stand than in Massachusetts, where the current U.S. Senate campaign is in the national spotlight.

Can you commit to attending a shift for this vigil? Sign up here

Massachusetts is in the national spotlight.

It’s time for us to put the climate crisis — and politicians and the media’s silence on climate change — in the spotlight too.

Onward,

350 Massachusetts

We are currently in the process of determining executive board positions for the next calendar year (this Spring and next Fall), including Co-Directors. Most of the board and current Co-Directors are either going abroad or graduating. We are reaching out to anyone who is invested in environmental issues on campus. We would love to see underclassmen and other fresh faces as leaders of TSC.

We are looking for two Co-Directors who lead TSC and oversee all TSC activies. If you have detailed questions about the position, please contact either Katie Segal or Steph Krantz. Even if you feel like you are too unfamiliar with TSC, we still encourage you to apply. During the month of December you will have an apprenticeship with Katie and Steph, and for the entirety of your term, you will have a past director serving on the board as an advisor.

If you are a freshman or a sophomore, do not feel intimidated! Our current board all started as either freshman or sophomores, so the position would ideally go to students from these years. However, if you are a junior, we encourage you to apply as well!

Please fill out this form by November 9th if you are interested. On the 10th, we will send out a list of all the candidates, and November 13th at 9pm in Eaton 204, we will hold an election.

We look forward to hearing from you!

We have been having so much fun at the sustainability workshops hosted by the Aidekman Arts Center! Last week was the Uran Homesteading workshop, and today several of us from TSC attended the Pickling Workshop!

We learned steps for different kinds of pickling and fermenting, and each left with two jars of pickled vegetables: one of cabbage (future sauerkraut), and one of mixed vegetables. Pickling is a great way to save and store extra vegetables and fruits, especially for the winter months when fewer things are in season.

Next week is the Urban Foraging Walking Tour, where we will be finding and eating wild plants in the area. ¡Qué divertido!

We were recently informed of a wonderful opportunity for all of you current seniors looking for employment after graduating (and maybe some of you juniors, if you’re super ahead of the curve). Environment America is a collective of state-based environmental advocacy groups, and offers fellowship positions each year. The two main features of this program are 1) the chance to get career experience in a chosen issue area (energy, water, preservation), and 2) training in all facets of advocacy work (from grassroots organizing to holding press conferences and lobbying).

One of the current fellows is a recent Tufts grad, Bruce Ratain (’11), who majored in Political Science. Bruce is currently recruiting for fellows, and can be contacted for information and questions here. More information can be found at the Environment America website here.

You know what that means, boys and girls: all the sustainable activities you could possibly ask for in one semester! Get ready for some exciting events, such as the sustainability roundtable, a film screening, speaker events, a leadership workshop—gosh, just a boatload of things, really—all in the name of making sure the planet is still working in 20 years!

If any of these things sound even a little bit interesting, as I know they do, be sure to attend TSC’s first regular meeting next Monday, 20 February, at 9 PM in East 015. After that, general TSC meetings are every 2nd and 4th Monday of the month; we’ll keep you updated on when the next one is.

Finally, if your eco-interests are a little more specific, why not attend the meetings of some of our branches? We have branches to fulfill every whim and fancy (and perhaps some less impulsive interests, too). Check out the weekly meeting times below:

All-TSC : 2nd and 4th Monday at 9:00 PM in East 015
Students for a Just and Stable Future: Sundays at 4:00 PM in Eaton 207
Tom Thumb’s Garden: Wednesdays at 9:00 in Eaton 201
Tufts Bikes: Thursdays at 8:00 in Eaton 207
Sustainable Action Squad: Thursdays at 7:30 PM (please email for location)
Food for Thought: Tuesdays at 9:00 PM in Eaton 203
Green Team: Mondays at 8:00 in Eaton 207
