Should my account be an Administrator on my computer?

OIT provides security updates, software installs and general maintenance duties for your computer, but there are some times that you may need to do this yourself either after hours, or during an emergency.  To see if you are eligible for administrative access to your computer, please contact OIT.

When an account with administrator privileges is set up, it should be used sparingly, and shouldn’t be used as a daily log in. When a user logs in as an administrator, they are putting their computer and data at risk.  If malware, or a virus attacks your computer while you are logged in as administrator, it can do much more damage to your computer than if you were logged in as a user with less privileges.  In most cases where a computer contracts a virus while the user is logged in with administrator privileges, the computer will need to be wiped of all data, and reloaded from scratch, which takes a considerable amount of time.

It is for this reason that OIT recommends that your Tufts account that you use every day to login should have limited privileges and that you have a second account that you use when you need to install software or change settings.

For more information, please don’t hesitate to call OIT.
