This joint effort between five members of the 4As network: Tufts University, Universidad de los Andes, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Makerere University, and the College of Arts and Letters Foundation of the University of the Philippines is funded by the Rockefeller Foundation. The project is focused on 3 activities:
- A global review of efforts to carry out Anticipatory Action for health-related outcomes.
- A series of marketplace convenings in Bangladesh, the Philippines, Uganda, and Colombia, to enable academics, government actors, civil society, and the private sector to discuss advances and efforts in Anticipatory Action for health.
- A deep dive research project into heatwaves in Bangladesh, researching the dynamics of heatwaves in three urban areas, risk perception, and existing heat-related action.
Given the growing interest in addressing the health impacts of climate change, we aim to conduct primary and secondary research to advance understanding of how anticipatory action contributes to timely, equitable, and effective adaptation at the climate-health nexus.
Ultimately, this project will benefit people around the world who are most vulnerable to extreme weather events exacerbated by climate change and will lay the groundwork for scaling health Anticipatory Action by governments and civil society, informed by community-defined actions and techniques for ensuring speed. The goal is to reduce the negative impacts of climate change on the health of priority at-risk populations.
