The purpose of Blakeley’s policies is to promote the safe and harmonious co-existence of all of Blakeley’s 84 residents. In this spirit, Blakeley residents are urged to consider how their actions may affect other residents. The policies described here are designed to facilitate this consideration. Below is a summary of Blakeley Hall policies; the full set of policies and procedures can be found in the 2019-2020 Resident Guide, which is accessible here.

Quiet Hours

Quiet hours are in effect in all residence halls on the Tufts campus during those times when residents are most likely to be studying or sleeping. They are as follows:

  • 11:00 PM to 8:00 AM (Sunday night through Friday morning)
  • 1:00 AM to 9:00 AM (Friday night through Sunday morning)

As a rule of thumb, during quiet hours the noise you are making should not leave the room you are in.

Social Events

A variety of social events are organized by the Blakeley Resident Directors and by individual residents throughout the year. Residents hosting events should keep in mind the following:

  • All social events, regardless of where they are held, must abide by the quiet hours policy, as well as by state and federal laws.
  • Potentially affected residents should be given the opportunity to express concerns to the event hosts and/or the RDs prior to the event. Hosts of social gatherings (including in their suites) should therefore check in advance with other residents who might be affected by noise or guests. This can be done either in person (for small events that will affect only a few people) or via the Blakeley listserv (Blakeley@elist.tufts.edu) for larger events.
  • If you would like to hold an event in the Blakeley lounge, please contact the RDs in advance to make sure that it will not be in use.


The Blakeley kitchen is a community resource that needs to be maintained in a sanitary and safe condition. Blakeley residents who want to use the communal kitchen should therefore keep in mind the following:

  • All kitchen users must abide by fire safety guidelines.
  • Residents will be assigned to a kitchen group. Refrigerator space, cupboards, and kitchen patrol duties are allocated by kitchen group. Kitchen groups are also responsible for ensuring that all group members are carrying out their individual cleaning duties.
  • Residents using the kitchen are required to clean up after themselves immediately. This includes washing dishes, wiping off counters and stoves, and putting trash and recycling in the appropriate bins.
  • Each week, one kitchen group is on “Kitchen Cleanup Duty.” During that week group members are responsible for: (1) cleaning the group’s refrigerator; and (2) checking the overall cleanliness of the kitchen daily, typically in the evening. This check should include the following:
  • Wipe down counters and tables.
  • Clean stoves, oven, microwaves, and sinks. Be sure to use the appropriate stove cleaning supplies when cleaning the stovetops.
  • Check kitchen supplies, such as dishwashing fluid and stove cleaning cream, pads, and scrapers.
  • Check to see that all appliances are working and report any repairs that are needed.
  • Empty clean dry dishes and utensils from dish racks.
  • It is not the kitchen cleanup group’s duty to wash dishes. The kitchen cleanup group is permitted to throw away any dirty dishes found unattended in the kitchen.
  • Janitorial staff are responsible for cleaning the kitchen floor once daily. The kitchen may be closed for 30 minutes daily for this purpose. Residents may not enter the kitchen during this time.
  • Please also note that it is not the janitorial staff’s job to wash dishes or clean the counters and stoves. That is the responsibility of the residents using the kitchen. Unattended dirty dishes may be thrown away.
  • Periodically, the Blakeley RDs may convene Kitchen Meetings to discuss kitchen-related issues that have arisen.
  • The use of the kitchen is a privilege, not a right. If the kitchen is not maintained in a sanitary and safe condition, it can be closed to particular individuals, groups, or all residents, depending on the nature of the problems encountered.

Fire Safety Policies

The following is a partial list of fire-related policies. For a complete list, please see the Blakeley Hall Resident Guide.

  1. Smoking is never permitted anywhere in Blakeley Hall.
  2. Do not use any heat-producing cooking appliances (this includes microwaves!) outside of designated kitchen areas (with the exception of University-approved Micro-Fridges).
  3. Possessing and/or using flammable materials is prohibited.
  4. Due to their inherent fire-safety danger, halogen lamps are banned from all Tufts buildings.
  5. Any act causing or contributing to a fire safety hazard is prohibited.
  6. Do not set a fire, either intentionally or accidentally.
  7. Do not sound the fire alarms (except in the case of an emergency).
  8. Do not tamper with or misuse fire protection equipment.
  9. Residents should familiarize themselves with two means of exiting their living area. In the larger halls, the second means of egress is usually an alternative hallway and an “emergency only” exit.
  10. The sounding of a fire alarm indicates that an emergency may exist. All residents must evacuate immediately and cooperate with official personnel.
  11. Fire escapes and windows should be kept clear and should be used only in event of an emergency.

Other Safety-Related Guidelines

For the security of all residents:

  • Do not prop open the Blakeley entrance doors.
  • Always keep your doors, screens, and windows locked when you leave the room or go to sleep.
  • Do not share your key or fob with others.
  • Do not let non-residents into the building unless they are your guests.
  • Report any suspicious activity to the campus police and to the Resident Directors.
