Are you a school teacher, principal or administer? Do you know a middle or high school student who is caregiving for a family member? There is a new opportunity for schools and districts to collect local data about students who are caregiving for siblings, parents, and grandparents. Students in your schools have caregiving responsibilities that might impact their education and wellbeing. Understanding this population can help schools better support caregiving youth and reduce inequalities.
There is now a new opportunity to understand the prevalence and needs of caregiving students in your school/district. An estimated 1 in 5 students are caregivers in the US, but they are not currently supported by educational systems or social services.
We are ready to help your school or district administer surveys to your students about their caregiving experiences. We are also ready to engage in conversations with school leaders and staff. To learn more, contact emma.armstrong_carter@tufts.edu.
This research will help to empower your school and district to make a meaningful impact on the lives of caregiving students, who may be falling behind in school. It will help your community understand how to track and develop policies support caregiving students – to improve attendance, graduation rates, and student wellbeing and success. School leaders who partner with the researchers will receive compensation for their time.
