Death and monastic life: an eccentric tour through a Hindu landscape

November 2 @ 12:00 pm - 1:15 pm

Brian Hatcher, CHAT Faculty Fellow and Packard Professor of Theology, discusses his latest research in a CHAT Fellow Seminar.

About the Talk:

This talk sets off on an eccentric route around a nearly defunct monastic network established by the Dasnami religious order in southwestern Bengal during the last three centuries. The goal of the itinerary is to bring into view the landscape, architecture, and habitus sustaining this Hindu monastic network, with special focus on built structures associated with the life and death of renouncers. By adopting an eccentric itinerary, the hope is to shift attention away from the “sacred center” and toward less visible, but persistent modes of vernacular religion that bear remembering in an era of ethnonationalism and essentialized Hinduism.
