Musical Minds: Beyond Nature vs. Nurture

A CHAT Fellow Seminar with faculty fellow Aniruddh Patel, Professor of Psychology at Tufts.

About the Talk:

Music is in every culture and is a vibrant research topic in both the cognitive sciences and the humanities. Historically, the cognitive sciences have emphasized universal mental processes while the humanities and allied fields, such as ethnomusicology, have emphasized cultural and historical variation in how and why people make and appreciate music. This emphasis on nature vs. nurture, plus structural factors in the academy, tend to keep scientific and humanistic work on music apart. Patel’s research on the evolution of musicality has made him realize that bridging these scholarly traditions is essential for understanding how we became a musical species. In this talk he will discuss how he is exploring cultural research on music to inform his scientific work on musical minds.
