Equivalency Exam Information
What are equivalency exams:
Equivalency Exams at Fletcher are optional exams offered during the academic year that students may attempt, to either satisfy a breath requirement, or be able to take a higher-level course to satisfy a breadth requirement.
In cases when an equivalency exam is offered by Fletcher (please see the exams offered below), the successful completion of an equivalency exam does not constitute transfer credit; it does not entitle the student to count that course for credit. Students may not obtain equivalence for required courses through cross-registration in similar courses at Harvard or elsewhere during the academic year.
The equivalency exams offered to MALD, MGA, LLM, MATA, and MA students are:
- E201 Introduction to Economics
- E210M Quantitative Methods
- B205 Data Analysis and Statistical Methods
The equivalency exams offered to MIB students are:
- E201 Introduction to Economics
- E210M Quantitative Methods
- E217M Managerial Economics
- B206 Data Analysis and Statistical Methods for Business

Where are the equivalency exam offered?
The equivalency exams are only offered online on Tufts Canvas. All incoming students are automatically added to the Canvas site during orientation.
Note: MIB students cannot take B205 to satisfy breadth requirements, if they wish to take an equivalency exam in statistics they must take B206 Statistics for Business Equivalency Exam
About the exam:
- The exam is 3 hours [180 minutes] and consists of both multiple-choice questions and long answer questions that require you to show your work. For Questions that require student to show their work, students can either write their responses directly into canvas or upload their response in the form of a jpeg, or pdf. Should a student wish to upload their response, they will need to make sure to leave enough time to do so. Extra time will not be given for students to upload their responses.
- Only the use of a simple calculator [non-scientific] is permitted. The use of a graphic or scientific calculator is prohibited. Other than the reference material provided with the exam [T-table, Z-table, and formula sheet], no outside material maybe consulted.
How to Prepare:
- The below details outline material that will be covered on the B205 Equivalency Exam. The chapter numbers refer to the following text:
- Text: Levine, et al, Statistics for Managers Using Microsoft Excel, 5th edition, Prentice Hall, 2008, ISBN-10: 0132252147:
- Chapters 1&3: Basic statistics and concepts: data collection and the nature of numerical information; descriptive measures of central tendency, dispersion, and skew.
- Chapter 4: The concepts and rules of probability
- Chapter 5: Discrete probability distributions: The expected value operator. Chapter 5 (section 5.1 only).
- Chapters 6 & 7: The normal distribution and sampling distributions: (skip sections 6.3, 6.4, 6.5, and 6.6) and chapter 7.
- Chapter 8: Statistical inference I: Confidence intervals. (skip sections 8.3 and 8.5).
- Chapter 9: Statistical inference II: Hypothesis testing. (skip section 9.5).
