Abstract:
Federally-funded Head Start programs, run by community organizations such as Greater Lawrence Community Action Council (GLCAC), provide early education services to families experiencing poverty. Staff at GLCAC’s five Head Start centers identified a need for classroom-based strategies to support children’s sensory regulation throughout the daily routine. Existing literature states preschool-aged children learn to self-regulate best through co-regulation with a trusted adult, and co-regulation efficacy can be improved with inclusion of physical activity and deep breathing strategies. Using an occupational therapy-informed lens, this project developed literacy-based co-regulation classroom toolkits—including lesson plans and materials—for supporting sensory and emotional co-regulation in the preschool classroom. Toolkits were provided and implemented with occupational therapy student support in four pilot classrooms, receiving positive preliminary feedback from administrators and teachers.
