Abstract:

This project explored the detrimental effects of age-based stereotype threat (ABST) on older adults (OAs), focusing on how it negatively impacts their cognitive performance on measures such as the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). The project aimed to increase occupational therapists’ awareness of the phenomenon and provide strategies to mitigate these effects. A literature review was conducted using Boolean searches across three databases. Based on the findings, the team developed educational materials, including an interactive training and an accompanying infographic, designed to inform clinicians about ABST and ways that it may be induced in clinical settings, and offer evidence-based strategies for minimizing it. Feedback from third-year occupational therapy students was used to refine and enhance the efficacy of the materials.
