Abstract:
This poster presentation demonstrates how practitioners can use arts-based experiential learning programming to build life skills and coping strategies. When arts-based methods are delivered in experiential learning settings, they promote the development of skills like problem-solving, decision-making, self-regulation, and critical thinking. Using an interdisciplinary lens with the Person-Environment-and-Occupational Model, trauma-informed care, cultural humility, and universal design for learning allows for a focus on strengths and potentials rather than deficits. It can also accommodate a variety of learning styles. Program development that emphasizes our unique specialization in conducting activity analyses and making environmental modifications can serve as a model for creating more such programs that optimize participant engagement and participation. A method of collaboratively creating this programming with the community is described.
