Essential Functions (Job Duties)
JOB PURPOSE
Provide leadership for the Environmental Justice program for the WSU law school. Develop strategies to complete grant deliverables and to engage and build the Environmental Justice community in Michigan. The Environmental Justice Coordinator is a grant funded, three year position. The Coordinator will report to the Director of the Transnational Environmental Law Clinic at the law school.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Working with the Transnational Environmental Law Clinic in close collaboration with the Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition and the Great Lakes Environmental Law Center.

Working with Transnational Environmental Law Clinic students and attorneys on a variety of environmental justice research projects and programs.

Assisting with the creation of a community Air Advisory Committee and staffing the Air Advisory Committee, including engaging community on air permitting concerns.

Facilitate exchange of information to advance co-learning and skills building within and beyond the Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition network.

Building a map of environmental justice practitioners and campaigns in Michigan.

Media and marketing of environmental justice issues including development of fact sheets, social media outreach, and development of promotional materials.

Supporting and developing youth leadership.

Recruiting allies and supporters.

Seeking funding and other resources for sustainability of the program.

Assuring that all communication, outreach materials, activities and specialized services are culturally and linguistically appropriate to the populations they serve.

Maintaining adequate program and fiscal records including source documents to support program activities.

Support activities of Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition that strengthen the relationships and network of environmental justice advocates across the state of Michigan and beyond, where available.

Willingness to travel.

Ability to drive private automobile, have or have the ability to attain a valid Michigan driver’s license, and good driving record.
Unique Duties

Qualifications
EDUCATION
Bachelor’s degree in environmental justice, public health, environmental sciences, environmental law or policy, or related fields preferred. Advanced degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE
3-5 years experience in program coordination or organizing. Experience working at or with a university is a plus.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

BUSINESS KNOWLEDGE: Working knowledge of and commitment to environmental justice, including familiarity with federal policy and Michigan environmental justice issues.

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: Demonstration of a trusting relationship with multi-ethnic, multi-racial groups, tribal communities, communities of color, women, rural and agricultural communities, migrant and immigrant communities, among other diverse constituencies. Ability to interact effectively with people from all backgrounds including environmental justice communities, academics, and government agencies. Self-starter.

TEAM-BUILDING SKILLS: Skills in facilitation and decision-making processes, consensus building, community-based popular education tools.

COMPUTER SKILLS: Working knowledge of computers and experience with a variety of software applications such as Microsoft Office, Adobe, Google Docs.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Written and verbal language skills in Spanish or Arabic a plus. Comfort with media and social media
