February 1 ­December 31 (40 hrs/week)

CitySprouts is a nonprofit school garden organization that partners with public schools in Boston and Cambridge to integrate academic and environmental education in the schools and neighborhood. CitySprouts¹ School Partnership Program provides schools with on-site gardens that function as outdoor classrooms; on-going maintenance and development of these outdoor classroom gardens; and support to teachers in integrating their classroom curricula outside to the school garden. CitySprouts¹ Middle School Program consists of both afterschool and summer programming with a goal to make the experience of garden-based learning accessible to all students.

 

The Garden Coordinator is a full-time, 11-month staff position. The Garden Coordinator encourages and supports teachers¹ use of the garden for instruction during the school year, maintains the school’s¹ outdoor classroom garden, and is a team leader for the Summer Middle School Program. This Garden Coordinator position is responsible for 4 school partners, allocating approximately 8 hours/week to each school during the school year with additional time each week for team meetings and projects. The Garden Coordinator reports to the Program Director.
Job Responsibilities
Encourage & support teachers¹ use of the CitySprouts garden for instruction
  • Serve as the garden ³expert² to the school community
  • Coordinate use of the growing space for teachers, school staff and community partners, ensuring that children at all grade levels have access to garden experience
  • Provide technical support for teachers to develop garden-based extension to classroom lessons and units
  • Co-teach with teachers in the garden and classroom
  • Document teachers¹ garden use at each school

 

Maintain schools¹ outdoor classroom garden as an educational resource for teachers and the school community
  • Maintain an attractive & functional garden space with a variety of edible crops, flowers, native species, and specialty plants throughout the growing season, using sustainable gardening practices
  • Ensure that teachers and community members have access to school garden supplies and resources
  • Coordinate and lead volunteer opportunities in the garden

 

Lead teams of middle school youth in CitySprouts summer program
  • Teach gardening, food systems, cooking skills, environmental science and support social emotional growth for school-based teams of youth in 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades
  • Mentor 2 Summer Fellows in running CitySprouts summer program, helping them develop garden educator, youth development and leadership skills
  • Support and actively engage families of summer program participants
Qualifications
  • Experience in a public school setting
  • Experience working with middle school youth, preferably in outdoor education
  • Experience managing a food-producing garden & maintain a working knowledge of sustainable gardening practices
  • Experience managing staff or mentoring interns and volunteers
  • Strong interpersonal skills including excellent listening, public speaking, oral and written communications skills
  • Proven capacity to work in a multicultural workforce, including sensitivity and competency in working with individuals and groups of diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and lifestyle backgrounds
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to and passion for the CitySprouts mission
  • Ability to do physical work outside
  • Access to a car (mileage reimbursement included)

 

Compensation
Base annual salary for this Garden Coordinator position (40 hours per week, February through December) is $32,640 (Benefits include health insurance, Simple IRA plan match & generous paid time off policy)
