Plant Technician, CA State Parks

CA State Parks is hiring one seasonal (temporary) plant technician under
the title of Scientific Aid ( $12.59 – $14.93/hour) or Environmental
Services Intern ($13.42-$17.5)  from June 11th – August 30th (~ 13 weeks
total) at the Sierra District Office of CA State Parks, located in
Tahoma, CA. Park seasonal housing may be available – please inquire.
Start and end dates are negotiable.

Under the guidance of lead personnel, the employee will assist in
natural resources management activities including forest vegetation
surveys, invasive species mapping and removal, native plants surveys, as
well as other hydrology and forestry related field work. The employee
may also work with volunteers, California Conservation Corps crews, non-
profit or other agency members. The employee will collect data using
Global Position System (GPS) and other methods. Under supervision, the
employee will routinely transfer and organize data, enter data into
various databases, make maps, prepare and assemble needed supplies and
equipment for field projects, maintain field equipment, etc.
Employee will participate in extensive field work, and must be
physically fit and able to walk 5-10 miles a day. Ability to hike in
steep terrain at high altitude and off-trail is necessary. Overnight
camping will be occasionally required.

Minimum Qualifications

Scientific Aid: A valid Class C Drivers License.  Equivalent of
completion of two years of college with 10 semester hours in biological
or chemical sciences, or one year of work experience in
biology/ecology/related field.  The employee must submit fingerprints
for a background check.

Environmental Services Intern: Equivalent to graduation from college
with a major or a minor (or equivalent) in urban, regional or
environmental planning, economics, natural resource management, ecology,
geography, earth or natural science, engineering, architecture, law, or
a related field.

Preference will be given to applicants with previous experience in one
or more of the following areas: identifying plants using a dichotomous
key, invasive species management, forestry, field biology; knowledge of
California native plants and exotic plants; basic PC computer operation
experience; GIS/GPS basic literacy; knowledge of the Tahoe basin.

The position typically works Monday through Thursday, from 7 am to 5:30
pm.  Approximate field-office breakdown: 60% field, 40% office. There
may be occasional irregular work hours, night, weekend work and
overnight camping. Appropriate field clothing (boots, long pants, long-
sleeved shirt) and at least one article of clothing with State Parks
markings are required.
