General Engineer, Environmental Measurement and Modeling Division
The Volpe Center is seeking experienced engineers or recent engineering graduates to join our team in the Environmental Measurement and Modeling Division. The Division addresses complex domestic and international problems involving fuel burn, noise, vibration and emissions – including measurements, modeling and analysis – for all modes of transportation.
The employee will apply knowledge of engineering disciplines and natural sciences to analyze environmental consequences due to transportation system changes and growth, informing clients on related activities. This work often directly supports policymaking. As such, employees coordinate with experts in multiple disciplines at the Volpe Center to execute programmatic goals. Tasks often include data analysis, numeric modeling and field measurements.
As a General Engineer, you will:
- Participate in studies, analyses, assessments, system development, and/or system deployment efforts in support of the functions of the organizational element to which assigned.
- Develop or adapt approaches and procedures which are followed by less experienced engineers on subsequent assignments of a similar nature. When required, coordinate and direct the work of other engineers who are assigned to accomplish portions of broad tasks.
- Coordinate assignments with those of engineers in other disciplines or engineers who are specialists in other subject matter areas. Meet with representatives of other organizations, other government agencies, or private industry to coordinate work.
- Participate in project management and/or project engineering functions for assigned projects. Participate in planning, managing, coordinating, and overseeing projects.
- Organize, write, review, and edit technical reports; prepare and make oral presentations of project status and results to Volpe Center management, sponsors, and other groups.
The ideal candidate uses judgment and ingenuity in evaluating and advocating strategies to resolve controversial issues or policies. The selected candidate will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams both within his/her organization and crossing organizational boundaries. S/he has the ability to effectively interact, communicate and collaborate with other Volpe Center divisions on environmental and economic and other analyses, and attends conferences and travels to sponsors to disseminate findings and pursue work opportunities.
Volpe is committed to fostering an all-inclusive diverse workforce where employees feel valued for their unique backgrounds and qualities and have a sense of belonging and engagement in helping to advance transportation for the public good.
