Greenhouse & Foraging Manager
Urban Farm Fermentory is a beverage producer, experimental urban farm, fermentation factory, and community engagement hub located in Portland, Maine. It is here that we craft authentic kombucha, jun,cider, beer, mead, vinegars, and foods using locally farmed and foraged ingredients when available. At UFF, staying in touch with our local environment is vital to staying true. We forage, harvest, grow and purchase local plants, herbs, roots, leaves, bark, fruit, fungi, seeds, etc., whenever in season to highlight our products with the flavorful and medicinal properties of our surroundings. Flavor exploration is one of our guiding principles that keep us a maker-driven company.
The Greenhouse & Foraging Manager is an important position at UFF. We are seeking a full time seasonal position starting immediately through October. Our urban greenhouse provides fresh flowers and herbs in special combinations to help flavor our beverages and vinegars.
Foraged and gleaned crops are also a key component of our success, providing the flavor of Maine to all our beverages. You will be responsible for scouting, planning, recruiting, and gathering the harvests that are available throughout Maine.
Duties include:
- Creating plan growing schedule from seed to harvest
- Performing daily care and maintenance which includes sweeping, sanitizing, watering, and pest control
- Propagating mature plants by seed, cuttings, and division
- Long-term care and maturation of all propagated plants
- Developing and implementing best management practices for plant production including fertilizer schedules, plant movements and placement, pest and disease management, greenhouse growing environment, and growing techniques
- Designing, implementing, and maintaining front gardens and outdoor seating areas
- Organizing volunteer forages with community for larger outings, i.e., dandelion and sweet fern
- Foraging of in-season items and processing materials upon arrival
- Assuring amount needed by forage is obtained
Experience: A minimum of two years of greenhouse and/or gardening experience is desired. Knowledge of various foods and crops used in production is desirable. A minimum of one year of experience working with farmers.
