Summer Research Assistant at the Department of Public Health and Community Medicine at Tufts University

The Tufts University, School of Medicine, Department of Public Health and Community Medicine seeks a student to help with a variety of environmental epidemiology research projects. The job is part time (10-15 hours/week) at an hourly rate commensurate with skills and experience. This is a summer position with the possibility of extending into the school year. Start and end dates are negotiable. Work-study is preferred but not required. Job responsibilities will vary over time. Responsibilities will depend on the interests and skills of the candidate as well as the needs of the research team. Responsibilities may include:

  • Literature reviews on topics such as metabolomic/proteomic/DNA methylation changes in response to environmental exposures, rural environmental health disparities, complex mixtures of environmental exposures, sex/gender differences in the response to environmental exposures
  • Manuscript preparation and writing
  • Data analysis for one or more cohort studies (e.g., Framingham Heart Study, Boston Puerto Rican Health Study)
  • Management of IRB applications
  • Engagement in research work-in-progress meetings
  • Presentation of research findings at academic conferences or public meetings

 Qualifications:

  • Strong interest in learning about environmental health, environmental epidemiology, exposure assessment, cardiovascular epidemiology, and/or epidemiological methods
  • Enjoy reading, analyzing, and synthesizing scientific literature
  • Strong writer
  • Excited to learn about the research process
  • Self-starter/highly motivated
  • Able to identify problems and brainstorm potential solutions
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Earned at least a B+ in at least two of the following courses: biochemistry, molecular biology, cellular biology, genetics
  • Earned at least a B+ in at least one of the following courses: air pollution control, environmental epidemiology, analysis of environmental health data, intro to environmental fieldwork, environmental chemistry, or other non-introductory environmental science course
  • Earned at least a B+ in at least two of the following courses: introductory epidemiology, intermediate epidemiology, introductory biostatistics, intermediate biostatistics, Stata, SAS, R, programming, or data management
