TREE Foundation Research Technician
This summer, the Maine TREE (Timber Research and Environmental Education) Foundation is hiring seasonal Research Technicians who will collect data for several existing ecosystem studies, and participate in novel applied research projects at Holt Research Forest (holtresearchforest.org). Holt Research Forest is the site of a long-term forest ecosystem study on the Maine coast. Since 1983, this 350-acre property in Arrowsic, Maine has hosted research projects emphasizing long term changes in forest wildlife and vegetation populations, and understanding the effects of forest management on these populations.
This work will be dynamic and cover a multitude of topics from tree health to wildlife. Work activities will include forest inventories (diameter and condition measurements), tree regeneration sampling, small mammal trapping (catch and release), seed counting and identification, data quality control and data entry. Additional projects may include bird territory mapping, salamander counts, trail maintenance, collecting tree cores and more! Those hired into these positions will also be provided networking opportunities through Maine TREE’s programs and the broader forest sector within Maine.
The ideal candidate will be:
— Readily able to identify native tree species
— Familiar with forest sampling methods, compass and map use, and/or other data collection experience
— Excellent at communicating in a team setting
— Willing and able to work outdoors safely in all environmental conditions while carrying field equipment
— Respectful of team members, with demonstrated responsibility in a professional setting
Work location is in Arrowsic, Maine (<1 hr from Portland, close to Bath and Brunswick). Onsite housing is available for $250 for the summer. Research Technicians will work 40 hours/week for 10-12 weeks from June through August at a rate of $15/hour. These positions will remain open until filled.
