Sustainable Coastal Tourism in the Context of
Global Environmental Change
Position description: The University of Rhode Island (URI) College of the Environment and Life Science (CELS) and the Department of Marine Affairs (MAF, http://web.uri.edu/maf/) have funding available for a student to study sustainable tourism in the context of global environmental change. URI is recognized as a leader in the US and globally in the field of coastal and marine research. We are particularly interested in a student wishing to pursue questions about the sociocultural and socioecological dimensions of sustainable tourism in the context of global environmental change, including but not limited to climate change, coastal/marine ecosystem restoration, biodiversity, fisheries, wildlife conservation, scientific research, and/or coastal development. We seek a highly-motivated student with a strong academic record who wishes to pursue social and interdisciplinary work. An interest in working internationally and a background in anthropology, environmental history, political ecology, or a closely related field is preferred. The student will study under Dr. Amelia Moore (https://uri.academia.edu/AmeliaMoore) .
Qualifications: Prospective applicants must have a Bachelors Degree. Applicant should have a strong interest in tourism studies and ethnographic fieldwork. Applicants should also have solid analytical and English writing skills.
Stipend and benefits: The successful applicant will be admitted to URI’s Department of Marine Affairs MA Program and receive tuition and a Research Assistant salary of $15,844 per year or more for two years. The student will pay activity fees to the University of Rhode Island. The student will work under the advisement of Professor Amelia Moore and others in the Department of Marine Affairs and other departments as appropriate for the student’s research. Possible continuation to a PhD will add at least two to three more years to the degree and depend on the student¹s research and career goals and the availability of funding. If pursing a PhD, the student will be expected to assist in securing funding beyond an initial three years.
Starting Date: The anticipated starting date for the assistantship is Fall 2016 or Spring 2017.
