Newton Community Farm (MA) Seeks 2021 Children’s Summer Educators/Program Managers
Newton Community Farm (NCF), a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching and modeling sustainable agriculture and environmental practices on thehistoric Angino Farm in Newton, MA, is seeking two experienced educators to teach classes and manage our summer program at the Farm for children elementary–middle school-age.
Our small-group summer classes will combine farm and garden work with other activities and information to explore topics related to farming, food, and the environment. Our week-long education programs include outdoor exploration, hands-on projects, and activities. The farm educators/managers are responsible for managing this summer program including: planning, organizing, and preparing content and facilitating record-keeping; teaching two classes per day; and maintaining the learning garden.
Dates: Full-time, M–F, 8 am–5 pm, June 28–August 27 including one paid holiday off on July 5. Opportunity to start training/planning sooner if available.
Compensation: $21-23/hour based on experience
The farm educators/managers will:
Develop lesson plans on: farming and gardening; plant science; nature; animals
and insects; food, health and nutrition; environmental stewardship; and food
systems, and adapt them to children in different age groups. Previous lesson
plans will be available and educators will adapt and add to them for this
summer’s classes. Planning and adjustments of lesson plans will take place
during the two weeks (June 28–July 9) prior to the start of the summer classes
and also throughout the summer.
Facilitate high-quality educational experiences for all participants for four
hours per day (July 12–August 27) by teaching lessons, leading hands-on
activities in the learning garden, and facilitating related discussion groups,
project work, games, and crafts.
Set up and clean up from classes and maintain the learning garden when classes
are not in session.
Ensure accurate record-keeping by requesting, processing, and maintaining
related paperwork.
Create and maintain a safe, inclusive learning environment for all
participants and supervise children at the Farm. Farm educators will be
responsible for cleaning and sanitizing any common surfaces or items after
each class and monitoring and enforcing compliance with health and safety
policies. Educators will also document the check-in and check-out process each
day.
Qualifications:
Previous teaching experience is required, preferably of children
Experience in gardening or agriculture or related fields either
professionally, as a volunteer, or personally
Enjoy working with children and being outside, no matter the weather! (Classes
will be held primarily outdoors.)
Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills
Reliable, punctual, energetic, and creative
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team by closely
collaborating with fellow summer educator and coordinating with other farm
staff
CPR/First Aid certification is required prior to the start of work. NCF can
help facilitate if needed.
Must be able to pass SORI/CORI background check
