Setting up Google Analytics

What is Google Analytics?

Google Analytics is a web analytics service offered by Google that tracks and reports website traffic. You can use it to generate reports on what pages are most frequently visited on your site, where visitors are located, and how long they spend on your site. On July 1st 2023 Google will cease to use it’s old GA system and move to a new one called GA4

Here is a good FAQ on GA4: https://www.rootandbranchgroup.com/what-is-ga4-google-analytics-faqs/

How to Set Up Google Analytics 4 (GA4)

Step 1: Login to analytics.google.com

If you have a gmail account you may find that you are already logged into GA with those credentials. You can continue with these credentials or you can “Add an Account” to log in with your Tufts email address:

Step 2: Create a GA Account and Data Stream

Each web site needs it’s on GA Account in order to get the tracking code that will be used in your site’s Google Analytics plugin setting. Google provides a step-by-step guide to setting up the account here: https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/9304153?hl=en

Step 3: Copy your Tracking Code (aka Measurement ID)

To get your measurement ID:

a. In Google Analytics click on Admin (bottom left)

b. Then click on “Data Streams”

c. Click on your data stream.

d. You’ll see your measurement ID for this data stream toward the top right. Copy that.

Step 4: Paste the Measurement ID into the Google Analytics Plugin

1. Go to your sites.tufts.edu site’s dashboard.

2. Under settings you will see the Google Analytics options.

3. That will bring up the plugin settings window. Click on “Plugin Settings”.

4. Paste in your Measurement ID into the field labeled GA Tracking ID.
