How Wine Changed World History: An Excuse for Social Tasting
Alcoholic beverages played a central role in religion, health, and occasionally even politics and diplomacy from the earliest of recorded history. Grab a bottle of wine or two (we have suggestions) and pull up a chair! For the first 20 minutes of our virtual social gathering, alum Charlie Bennett F76, F78 (who now heads the largest wine society in the United States) will take a slightly irreverent, rifle shot look at the role of wine in history, starting from ancient qvevri found in Georgia (not the one with Atlanta in it) to the proliferation of wine commerce in dozens of areas between the 30th and 50th parallels (N and S) around the globe.

While Charlie gives us his 10-cent tour of wine history, he’ll also challenge participants to taste and compare three popular red wine grape varieties (Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, and Cabernet Sauvignon; pick whatever producers you enjoy) and suggest a quick shorthand for how to recognize and remember the signature aromas and flavors of each wine variety, when you find them in a glass again. Pretension not included!

After this introductory tip of the hat to a historical theme, the we’ll open for general reminiscence and discussion – about wine or anything else alums would like to visit about.

Registrants will receive a list of suggested wines to sample along with cheese pairing ideas.
