Film Screening: The Death of Stalin with Joshua Rubenstein

September 20, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Please join the Russia and Eurasia Program at The Fletcher School for a screening of the critically acclaimed political satire film The Death of Stalin (2017), directed by Armando Iannucci. The movie screening will be followed by a talk by scholar Joshua Rubenstein on his book The Last Days of Stalin (2016). Watch Hollywood’s comedic take on the events surrounding the death of the Soviet leader in 1953 and listen to historical commentary about Stalin’s death and its significance not only for the USSR but also for the rest of the world. The film screening will be preceded by a social hour also hosted by the Russia and Eurasia Program.

The Last Days of Stalin takes us back to the second half of 1952 when no one could foresee an end to Joseph Stalin’s murderous regime. He was poised to challenge the newly elected U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower with armed force and was broadening a vicious campaign against Soviet Jews. Stalin’s sudden collapse and death in March 1953 was as dramatic and mysterious as his life. It is no overstatement to say that his passing marked a major turning point in the twentieth century. But after Stalin’s death, the overly cautious response by the Eisenhower administration to the Kremlin’s conciliatory gestures missed an opportunity to significantly reduce the tensions of the Cold War.

Joshua Rubenstein is a longtime Associate of Harvard’s Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies and Associate Director for Major Gifts at Harvard Law School. He was an organizer and Northeast Regional Director for Amnesty International USA for 37 years. He has written about Soviet dissent and the Holocaust in German-Occupied Soviet territory. His book Stalin’s Secret Pogrom: The Postwar Inquisition of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee (2001), received a National Jewish Book Award. His concise, interpretive biography of Leon Trotsky is part of the prestigious Jewish Lives Series of Yale University Press. The Last Days of Stalin is his tenth book and will also appear in Azeri, Estonian, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Portuguese, Polish, and Ukrainian editions.
