The School of Arts and Sciences at Tufts University hosts over 20 academic centers and institutes. Some are quite focused on one topic, such as the Tufts Institutes of Cosmology or the Center for the Study of Race and Democracy. Some may distantly related to food systems, like the Center for South Asian and Indian Ocean Studies, while other contain activities much closer to our interests here. Find a full list of the Centers and Institutes housed at the School of Arts and Sciences here.
The Center for Interdisciplinary Studies (CIS) does not have food systems at the core of its mission, however as food systems are innately interdisciplinary systems, drawing from fields like public policy, environmental science, sociology, nutrition, economics, and international relations, it is important to us to highlight the CIS as a place where students and faculty can discuss and explore the different aspects that make up food systems. Faculty-affiliates of the CIS come from departments such as Community Health, UEP, Civic Studies, and Sociology. Students interested in how to bridge subjects together within the lens of food systems, should consider the CIS as a place to find out more about how best to do that.
The School of Arts and Sciences also lists Tufts-wide institutes on its site, like the Tufts Institute of the Environment and the Global Development and Environment Institute. Find out more about these groups that work on food systems via their pages on this site.
