Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences

The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, located in the downtown campus, is focused on clinical and basic science and in that way is interdisciplinary. As food systems are interdisciplinary, any of the other schools and programs listed on this site are accordingly interdisciplinary in nature. The GSBS is decidedly more focused in its scope than many of the other food systems related activities at Tufts. In fact, no activities at the GSBS are directly related to food systems, however, at the Tufts Food Systems Initiative, we believe it is important to make connections that would normally be overlooked.

As food is increasingly being treated as medicine and food systems are closely tied with public health systems and innovation in science and technology, the work being done at the GSBS is indeed connected to food systems.

Academic programs include Cell, Molecular, & Developmental Biology, Genetics, Immunology, Neuroscience, and Molecular Microbiology. These fields alone do not feature in food systems, however, taken into account with the work being done at schools across Tufts, perhaps in water contamination research at the Engineering School, and public health policy at the Fletcher School, the science research being done at the GSBS makes an important part of food systems.
