TNDS 2025: Data Literacy for AI in Food, Health & Environment

The 2025 Tufts Nutrition Data Symposium (TNDS) explores the foundational role of data literacy in enabling the responsible and effective use of AI and machine learning in food systems research. This includes critical areas such as health, nutrition, and environmental sciences — where preparing high-quality, well-documented datasets is essential for meaningful, ethical analysis.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the risks and consequences of applying AI to food systems data.
  • Gain exposure to practical techniques for data cleaning, harmonization, and documentation.
  • Critically evaluate datasets to determine their readiness for AI and machine learning applications.
  • Connect and collaborate with peers and professionals across sectors.

Event Format

  • Flash-style lightning talks showcasing innovative student and researcher projects.
  • Cross-sector panel discussion on preparing data for AI applications.
  • Hands-on data session with the Tufts Data Lab — real-world dataset experience.
  • Optional networking session with industry and academic leaders.

Why This Matters

  • Prevent misuse of AI in sensitive health and food contexts.
  • Build sustainable, ethical, and transparent data workflows.
  • Strengthen collaboration between academia, industry, and policymakers.
