“Passage: Between Rites and Rights”

For her finale assignment in the GAIA course P214: Gender Theory and Praxis, MALD ’23 Rohini Roy combined the written and spoken word to produce a poignant reflection on patriarchy, beauty standards, class, caste, and culture. In her piece, Rohini complicates the perceived status and role of the parlour wali didi, employees of beauty parlours in India, in both resisting and compounding enforced compliance with patriarchal norms of beauty and gendered performance.
