NEW CHALLENGES TO EUROPEAN SECURITY

Come experience again the camaraderie and intellectual stimulation of your GMAP year with fellow alumni, current students, and faculty in one of the great historical capitals of Europe. This is an extraordinary time to be in Estonia. In the midst of potentially massive geopolitical developments in Eastern Europe, the Alumni Weekend affords a unique opportunity to examine the current regional climate with local experts and fellow members of the GMAP community.

DEEPEN YOUR KNOWLEDGE

During the weekend in Tallinn, you can look forward to meeting and engaging with some of the forefront authorities on the current challenges facing European Security. On Friday evening not only will we be joined by Dean James Stavridis, Dean of The Fletcher School and former Supreme Allied Commander of NATO, but he will speak on our Keynote Defense Panel alongside Estonian Minister of Defense Sven Mikser and Chief of Defense Riho Terras.

During the Saturday and Sunday Continuing Education sessions, discussions will be lead by Dean Nutter; Associate Professor of Political Science Jeffrey Taliaferro; Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee at the Estonian Parliament Mr. Marko Mihkelson; and Ambassador Marina Kaljurand (FG95), First Undersecretary and Legal Adviser at the Estonian foreign ministry, former Ambassador of Estonia to the United States, and a great GMAP and Fletcher supporter.

ENJOY THE BEST OF HISTORICAL AND CONTEMPORARY TALLINN

In true GMAP fashion, you will have the opportunity to complement your time in the classroom with time to unwind and explore the best of Tallinn, enjoying the events, good food, and good company you have come to expect of GMAP. Ambassador Jeffrey Levine, US Ambassador to Estonia, has warmly invited us to his home for a cocktail reception with an impressive list of local notables. The keynote Defense Panel will follow a wonderful dinner during which you will mingle with alumni, current students, faculty, and special guests in the beautiful Swissôtel ballroom.

You will get to know Tallinn with a tour that will lead you on foot through the winding cobblestone streets of the Old Town, exploring its unique and exquisitely preserved 13th-17th century Hanseatic city-state legacy, and by bus through notable contemporary portions of the city. You will dine at some of the best restaurants in Tallinn, at times with current students, at others exclusively with your fellow alumni. Feel free to use the built-in free time during the weekend to further explore Tallinn and its surroundings, or to take advantage of the luxurious spa area and services of the Swissôtel!

Despite the brevity of the weekend, you will come away with a rich knowledge of Tallinn, new contacts and friendships, rekindled old relationships, and an appreciation of the most crucial regional challenges facing Eastern Europe with implications for the rest of the world.
