Julia is an Associate Professor in the Department of Education and holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Biology.
Julia received an M.S. in Population Biology and a Ph.D. in Science Education from the University of California, Davis. Her research spans multiple communities including the learning sciences and discipline-based education research (DBER) in Biology (and sometimes Physics).
An experienced and spirited biology teacher and learner, Lara is interested in how to cue and support practices of not-knowing (i.e. wondering) and sense-making, in students and in the instructor participants of the professional development program which she helps coordinate.
Matt has a background in Biological Science. He is interested in studying novice teachers’ approaches to teaching biology at the college level. Within the context of our research team, I am involved in the design and development of the BIO 14 lab curriculum as well as the creation of a professional development course for the graduate student TAs that will teach BIO 14 lab.
Robert has a background in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, and Computer Science Education. His research interests involve characterizing productive, emergent scientific practice, with the aim of identifying features of learning that could improve curriculum implementation and pedagogy in STEM classes.

Aditi worked as a postdoctoral researcher studying students’ computational practices in biology labs.
Liren joined the group as a Summer Scholar and completed an interdisciplinary thesis on students’ arguments in lab reports.
