Tongue of Monkey, Proximal Portion

In this micrograph of the proximal portion of the tongue from a young monkey, you can see the large papillae on the superior surface of the organ. Among the muscle fibers in the core of the organ, you can see purplish patches. These are the lingual salivary glands, the details of which cannot be made out at this low magnification.
