Recto-Anal Junction

Recto-anal junction in the dog. The rectal area is covered by colonic mucosa. The anal canal is covered by stratified squamous epithelium. Part of the squamous epithelium is not clear at this magnification. This is probably due to some infiltration of inflammatory cells into the tissue or other pathological conditions (x). Note the anal glands that mark the junction between the two regions. Please refer to Figure 13:117 in the Bacha and Bacha atlas for a schematic drawing of this area. PK1634. J11a. H&E.
