Neurohypophysis of the horse with nerve fibers and pituicytes

Organ: Pituitary, Tissue: Pars nervosa, neurohypophysis, Species: Horse. Comments: Numerous unmyelinated axons of secretory neurons are seen here. The cell bodies of the neurons are in the hypothalamus. Secretory products accumulate in the ends of axons (Herring bodies) but are not observable at this magnification. The major hormones involved are vasopressin (antidiuretic hormone) and oxytocin.
