Higher magnification of secretory acini in lactating mammary gland.
The secretory acinus of the mammary gland is like a basket suspended in a net. The secretory epithelium is cuboidal. This is surrounded by a layer of myoepithelial cells (best demonstrated with immunohistochemistry). Outside the basement membrane of the acinus is a network of capillaries and lymphatics (not obvious here). Milk is a mixture of water, protein and fat and some mucus. Production and release of milk are under the influence of prolactin and oxytocin. The interlobular duct has a stratified cuboidal epithelium and is surrounded by connective tissue. PK4892B-10. H&E.
